Funds Released for Alaska Native Education Programs The Department of Education has informed Senator Ted Stevens that several Alaskan groups and schools will benefit from funds he secured to implement the Alaska Native Education Equity Act. The funding was part of the Fiscal Year 2002 Labor and Health and Human Services Appropriations bill, which also funds the Department of Education. "I'm pleased to see these funds being awarded to Alaskan organizations and schools. Funds authorized through the Alaska Native Education Equity Act expand the educational opportunities for all Natives in our State and provide needed training for parents and teachers," said Stevens. The Alaska Native Education Equity Act, authored by Stevens, was included as an amendment in the No Child Left Behind Act, passed in December of last year. The amendment increased authorized annual funding and expanded activities authorized under the Alaska Native Education Act. Those receiving grants are: • $307,173 for the Sealaska Heritage Institute to develop curricula, lesson plans and teaching materials for Tlingit language partial immersion classes tailored to kindergarten, first grade and second grade, and to train prospective and current educators to use the materials.

School Board: Kikendall wants more vocational/technical classes By JULIA O'MALLEY If you ask him, Steve Kikendall will tell you he's not the type to bother with the pretense of removing his ball cap when going indoors. And, now that he is campaigning for the Juneau School Board, he wears his Tyler Rental cap, with a blue "Kikendall for School Board" button on it, everywhere he goes. Steve Kikendall "Half the people think my name is Steve Tyler, because of Tyler Rental," he said, gesturing at his cap. Kikendall, 43, is the manager at Tyler Rental, a Juneau business that rents everything from "hand tools to 200,000-pound excavators." He has lived in Alaska for 22 years, seven of those in Juneau, and he and his wife, Stacy, have two children. The youngest, Ashli, is in the third grade at Gastineau Elementary. His son, Jason, has graduated from high school and now works at Greens Creek Mine. Kikendall got his start in business with the Alaska Commercial Co. in the early 1980s, running stores in a several Alaska communities, including Dillingham, Nome and Dutch Harbor. While he was in Dutch Harbor, he served on the school board for three years, two as board president.

Schools offer high-tech skill - for a price By ROBERT HOWK Alaska Journal of Commerce ANCHORAGE - The job market in Alaska is hungry for workers with high-tech skills, and business is brisk at vocational training centers and other educational institutions. "We are all looking at shortages projected, serious shortages in the work force," said Sally Suddock, executive director of the Alaska High-Tech Business Council. Suddock helps organize a group called the Industry Skills Coalition, which brings together members from the manufacturing, tourism, construction, petroleum and health-care sectors of the economy. She said there is stiff competition for well-trained entry-level employees in virtually all industries in Alaska, but the ISC group members have a common goal.
