Special attention is given to the preparation of Native and non-Native teachers for small rural schools in Alaska. The guidelines are presented as they relate to each of the Alaska Teacher Standards, taking into consideration the Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools and the Alaska Student Content Standards. It is intended that all teachers in Alaska be prepared in such a way that they are able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in all of these standards, and that programs preparing educators in Alaska incorporate these guidelines as outcome indicators in their planning and implementation.

GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon We hope to see many new schools taking the GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon Challenge The following information explains some of the basics of this all-academic program for high school students. Each complete team is made up of a total of nine students. Team members may be in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. As long as they are in high school full-time, they qualify. A full-time student is defined as a student who is enrolled in four or more class periods per day. Each team should have three students in each of the three grade point average categories of:
  • Honors 3.75-4.00 GPA Scholastic 3.00-3.74 GPA Varsity 0.00-2.99 GPA
Contestants may compete in a higher division than their grade point average category, but not in a lower division. GPA's are determined from the last two complete years of transcripts and must be verified by the coach and then the State Director. Schools are encouraged to bring one alternate for each of the three GPA categories to the State Competition. Each team member competes in all ten events of the Decathlon and is eligible for individual medals in all ten events. Only six scores count for the final team standing in the competition:

NEA-Alaska VOTER GUIDE Candidate : Kevin Meyer House District 30 Education Funding Over the past decade the legislature has increased funding by 5%, while inflation has cost schools 30%. Thus, inflation has eroded the funding of our schools by 25%. Would you sponsor legislation that inflation-proofs the education funding formula?
No response X Would you support the passage of legislation that inflation-proofs the education funding formula?
Yes X Education funding in Alaska contains many unfunded mandates-HSQGE, requirements for remediation, requirements for professional development, and alignment of curriculum to standards. Two years ago a task force report of business leaders and educators found the need for additional funding for education to meet the constitutional mandates of the citizens of Alaska.
yes X Rationale: no response The legislature has mandated that students demonstrate they can meet standards in order to graduate from high school with a diploma. Despite providing Learning Opportunity Grants this year, additional recurring funding (in the foundation formula) needed to implement programs and hire quality personnel has not been forthcoming. Will you sponsor legislation to adequately fund these mandates?

What is the Elementary and Secondary Education Act?
Since it was first enacted in 1965, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) has described the federal requirements for public schools. The Act must be re-authorized every five to seven years. President George Bush proposed major changes in the federal role in education in 2001. With bipartisan support and input from state educators, the new ESEA, also called the No Child Left Behind Act, makes major changes in the federal role and puts more resources into states to support public schools in exchange for increased accountability. FAQs Who can attend school? Alaska state law guarantees a tuition-free education through twelfth grade to all children between the ages of 6 and 20. The law also requires children to attend school between the ages of 7 and 16, and may require attendance beginning at age 6 if a child has been enrolled in first grade at a public school for more than 60 days. Back to Top How are Alaska's schools governed? The seven-member sets education policy with the following mission: “to help ensure that young children arrive at their first day of school ready to learn and that all students succeed in their education and work, shape worthwhile and satisfying lives for themselves, exemplify the best values of society, and are effective in improving the character and quality of the world around them.” The Board also sets state academic content and performance standards; establishes minimum high school graduation requirements; approves annual lists of school construction and major maintenance projects and publicizes and puts into action regulations governing programs that operate under Title 14 of the Alaska Statutes, including public schools, early childhood and child care programs, and state libraries and museums. State Board members are appointed by the governor, and the Board appoints an advisor representing the military community, a student advisor, and a student advisor-elect.
