NWABSD Alaska Studies Social Studies Curriculum
about this curriculum GOALS OBJECTIVES COMMENTS ACTIVITIES RESOURCES To understand how geography influenced the settlement of Native peoples in different regions of Alaska by paying special attention to land and water resources and climate. To examine how geography influences natural resource development today. Identify important geographical features including land mass, bodies of water, resources and climate. Partition Alaska into geographic and climatic regions Name Native groups within these regions. Focus on a geographical region of the state and identify natural resources in that area. Read and draw maps and chart weather data for your region. Visit weather bureau or invite a guest speaker from the weather service. Invite elders to share their traditional knowledge of weather patterns with students Build a vocabulary by learning geographic terminology and names of Native groups. Make a collage poster depicting contemporary resource use in various climatic and geographic regions of Alaska, and display.

My general interest in the Earth Sciences focuses on the topic of "surficial processes." This discipline examines the physical and chemical processes that occur near the earth's surface. Because the near-surface is an interface between the atmosphere and the underlying lithosphere, an understanding of meteorology, hydrology, and geology is required. The interdisciplinary nature of the discipline is reflected in my training, as I have degrees in both Physical Geography (MS) and Geology (Ph.D). My primary areas of research are three-fold. The bulk of my efforts are concentrated on permafrost and periglacial studies conducted in the Arctic, primarily in northern Alaska. This research has been continually funded by the Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation since 1991, and focuses on energy and moisture exchange between the atmosphere and permafrost, or permanently frozen ground. Permafrost underlies about 20% of the earth's land surface.

    • Meaford , Ontario -(Offsite-Link) Re-Visit John Muir's Meaford Experience on June 13, 1998! - Muir wrote, "When I came to the Georgian Bey of Lake Huron, whose waters are so transparent and beautiful, and the forests about its shores with their ferny, mossy dells and deposits of boulder clay, it seemed to be a most favorable place for study... In a beautiful dell, only a mile or two from the magnificent bay, I fortunately found work in a factory where there was a sawmill and lathes for turning out rakes, broom, and fork handles, etc." Muir worked at Trout's mill for a year and a half, greatly improving the efficiency of output of rake handles by making efficiency improvements. But on February 21 of 1866, the factory building and all of its contents took fire, thus ending Muir's Meaford sojourn.

The program conducts long-term geographic studies of the land use and disturbance histories of the U.S. and produces reports on the status and trends of the Nation's land surface. The program contributes scientific value and knowledge to the spatial content of The National Map
Land Remote Sensing (LRS) The Land Remote Sensing Program seeks to promote excellence in remote sensing for understanding the Earth's land environment.

    Alaska Science Forum
September 8, 1982 Alaska Place Names
Article #563 by Larry Gedney This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Larry Gedney is a seismologist at the Institute. From Aats Bay in the southeast to the Zyzek-twina River near the Seward Peninsula, Alaska's place names reflect the colorful history of the state. In the book, Dictionary of Alaska Place Names , the U. S. Geological Survey has brought together a collection of over 40,000 of these. Some, such as Qimiqpayaat Kuugauzanga (Eskimo for Short Ridge Creek) may have a slightly foreign ring to the English ear, while others such as Old Dummy Lake have a downright homey touch. Alaska geographic names derive primarily from six general sources. Major contributions have evolved from native names provided by the indigenous people of AlaskaIndian, Eskimo and Aleut. In the native tongues, these are typically descriptive in nature. They differ from the European practice in that the Natives tend to name small landmark features and ignore the large. In addition, several names were commonly applied to one feature. A stream, for instance, may have various names along its length, depending on different characteristics. Thus, we have Angoyachtoly Creek, which means "extends into the tundra as far as a kayak can travel in a day." Or Aniyuyaktuvik Creek, which means "place where wind has hardened snow so that a snow house can be built." Native names commonly begin with A's and I's, and anything beginning with a K stands a better-than-even chance of being native.

Humpback whale diving near Ketchikan, Alaska.
    Ketchikan, Alaska, by "Blue Canoe"
By Richard Bangs Alaska is big and wild but not quite as remote as you might think. From Seattle, you can get there and back during an incredibly scenic long weekend. To begin, catch the Matanuska, a blue-hulled ferry (the "Blue Canoe"), which departs at 6 p.m. from Bellingham, Washington, an hour-and-a-half drive from Seattle. Now relax and watch the scenery flow by as you navigate the fabled Inside Passage 595 miles to Ketchikan. The ferry, following a fjord-filled route once plied by Tlingit Indians in cedar canoes, offers a mini-vacation in itself, complete with solarium, lounge, cafeteria, and a full bar where I enjoyed a shot of Canadian Club before tucking into my stateroom for the night. Next morning, I repaired to the upper deck and passed the day chatting with flannel-shirted passengers and watching eagles, porpoises, and orcas feeding in krill-rich waters lined with temperate rain forest and bluffs. Kodiak Island Detailed Geography
The Barren Islands to the north of Shuyak Island are primarily rocky scapes. Tugidak Island on the south is relatively flat and supports extensive areas of wet and moist tundra. The outlying islands south of the Trinity Islands are lower in elevation than Kodiak Island and support more limited vegetation growth. From Shuyak Island to northeastern Kodiak Island, stands of Sitka spruce dominate land from shore to the treeline. These stands extend south to a general northwest-southeast dividing line running from Kupreanof Peninsula to Cape Chiniak. Southwest Kodiak Island is relatively flat and supports extensive areas of wet and moist tundra.
    Offshore Areas
Offshore areas include submerged lands and waters beyond mean lower low water to the limit of Kodiak Island Borough. Because of the extensive estuarine system of the Borough, offshore areas are those outside the headlands of the estuaries. Living resources are abundant in the Borough's offshore area. Dominant fauna include shellfish, finfish, marine mammals, and marine birds. Kelp and other macroalgal beds provide habitat for sea otters, spawning herring, and juvenile fish. They are important feeding areas for waterfowl and marine birds, and provide valuable primary production exported as algal drift, which is assimilated elsewhere in the marine ecosystem.
