Alaska's Kenai Moose Research Center: A World Leader in Moose Science
by Riley Woodford On a crisp morning this fall, biologist Stacy Jenkins tucked two oversize baby bottles under her arms and rallied her reinforcements. Her three babies were just a few months old, but they were pushy, hungry and well over 100 pounds each. Tom Lohuis carried a third bottle of warm milk, and John Crouse swung open the gate at the Kenai Moose Research Center. The three moose, bleating at the sight of breakfast, rushed headlong for the scientists. Continued

Mountains and Islands
The Geography of Petersburg, Alaska
Petersburg is the only population center on Mitkof island, located appx. 100 miles south of Juneau and 100 miles north of Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska (the area is locally referred to as "Southeast"). It is a smaller island located in the middle of the Alexander Archipelago. Mitkof Island is mountainous and heavily forested, as is most of Southeast Alaska. The island's highest point is Crystal Mountain (3317 ft.), with the island's other peaks averaging around 2500 feet. The high rugged mountains of the coast range tower above Mitkof, while the fjords and glaciers of the mainland lay just a few miles to the east. Mitkof Island is approximately 24 miles long and 135,000 acres in size. Ground cover consists mostly of muskeg... a spongy, grassy bog which always stays wet. The island of Mitkof is geographically tied to the island of Kupreanof. The two are separated by over 20 miles of narrow tidal waterway, the Wrangell Narrows, which in some areas is barely wide enough to accommodate the Alaska State ferry. The Wrangell Narrows is a rich fast waterway, with tides varying from a high of 19 feet to a low of -4 feet in one day. The Wrangell Narrows meet Frederick Sound at the north end of Mitkof Island, where Petersburg is located. Frederick Sound is a major Southeast waterway which intersects with lower Stephans Passage and Chatham Strait. The rich waterway of Frederick Sound is home to vigorous runs of salmon, deep dwelling halibut, and summertime humpback whales. The Stikine-LeConte Wilderness Area and Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness are nearby.

Alaska, an American Colony
Stephen Haycox

Alaska has not evolved in a vacuum. It has been part of larger stories: the movement of Native peoples and their contact and accommodation to Western culture, the spread of European political economy to the New World, and the expansion of American capitalism and culture.
Alaska, an American Colony focuses on Russian America and American Alaska, bringing the story of Alaska up to the present and exploring the continuing impact of Alaska Native claims settlements, the trans-Alaska pipeline, and the Alaska Lands Act. In contrast to the stereotype of Alaska as a place where rugged individualists triumph over the harsh environment, distinguished historian Stephen Haycox offers a less romantic, more complex history that emphasizes the broader national and international contexts of Alaska's past and the similarities between Alaska and the American West. Covering cultural, political, economic, and environmental history, the book also includes an overview of the region's geography and the anthropology of Alaska's Native peoples.
Throughout Alaska, an American Colony, Haycox stresses the continuing involvement of Alaska Natives in the state's economic, political, and social life and development. He also explores the power of myth in historical representations of Alaska and the controlling influence of national perceptions of the region.

Fishing and subsistence activities are prevalent. TLINGIT CARVING The Tlingit people are artistic by nature and some people would argue that their fine sense of workmanship and design is best exemplified through the medium of carving. Most Tlingit objects were carved from wood, the most readily available and highly useable substance. Other materials such as horn, copper and later silver were also decorated with carved figures.

SONG: What a Wonderful World
My name is Barbara Logan and I will be your hostess. I arrived in the state of Alaska on July 7, 1977 and have lived in Fairbanks for over twenty-six years. When I was growing up, in hot central California, I always wished to live in a place where there was snow, so I could have a "white" Christmas. Well, now I have my "white" Christmases... also "white" Octobers, Novembers, Decembers, Januarys, Februarys, Marches and Aprils, and sometimes Septembers and Mays - EVERY YEAR! The lesson of this story is:
"BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR." (SMILE) Alaska is a beautiful state, filled with wilderness lands and an abundance of wildlife. It can get pretty cold here in the winter, but the mild summer weather makes up for the winter cold. The Aurora Borealis, or "Northern Lights," as we call them, are absolutely mesmerizing. It's well worth venturing out on a cold winter night to see them dance across the sky. I have a lot of information about Alaska and my Alaska photos on my pages linked below. I hope you can stay a while and experience a little bit of our life here in the "Last Frontier."

From Anchorage the Seward Highway leads to, you guessed it, Seward, on the Kenai Peninsula. The Sterling Highway connects with the Seward and leads to Homer, which is absolutely the end of the road. The Parks Highway starts north of Anchorage in the town of Wasilla (population about 5000). It leads to Denali National Park and on to Fairbanks. The Dalton Highway, once known as the North Slope Haul Road, runs from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay.

Geography serves as a bridge between the natural and social sciences by studying the interrelationships between the earth's physical and biological systems, and how these environmental systems provide a natural resource base for human societies. Geographers are interested in patterns of human settlement, natural resources distribution, resources use and conservation. Geographers are interested in the sense of place among the peoples of the world. Geographic methodologies include observation, measurement, description and analysis of places or areas including their likenesses, differences, interdependence and importance. Geographic professions are diverse and include opportunities in mapping, remote sensing, demographics, international relations, landscape analysis, environmental assessment and planning, regional planning, and weather and climate analysis. Also, geography provides an excellent background for specialized or interdisciplinary graduate study.

Article #617 by Larry Gedney This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Larry Gedney is a seismologist at the Institute. While most Alaskans take pride in their hardiness, even the most seasoned sourdough must blush when Johnny Horton proclaims in one of his best-selling records that "When It's Springtime In Alaska, It's 40 below." While that may be true on rare occasions, it's hardly commonplace. There are many examples of outlandish stories that have been told of life in the far north (also many very good ones, such as those written by Jack London). A couple of relatively recent songs illustrate the point that there is a lack of general knowledge about where Alaska is, and what it's all about. One example is found in Lefty Frizzell's fairly old (late 1950s) recording of "Saginaw, Michigan." In this saga, the hero, who is trying to woo his sweetheart in Saginaw, is repulsed by her father, who claims he is a bum. The hero comes to Alaska and, after a while, sends a telegram that claims that he has made the "Richest Strike In Klondike History." The girl's dad, who is obviously a greedy old cuss, now compliments the boy and wants to buy his claim, offering in the bargaining, his daughter's hand. Well, the deal is made, the kids are rich, and everything seems rosy. Except that our hero turns out to be a con-man. As the final words of the song go, (as narrated by the bridegroom):
