State of Alaska
FAQs Who can attend school? Alaska state law guarantees a tuition-free education through twelfth grade to all children between the ages of 6 and 20. The law also requires children to attend school between the ages of 7 and 16, and may require attendance beginning at age 6 if a child has been enrolled in first grade at a public school for more than 60 days. Back to Top How are Alaska's schools governed? The seven-member sets education policy with the following mission: “to help ensure that young children arrive at their first day of school ready to learn and that all students succeed in their education and work, shape worthwhile and satisfying lives for themselves, exemplify the best values of society, and are effective in improving the character and quality of the world around them.” The Board also sets state academic content and performance standards; establishes minimum high school graduation requirements; approves annual lists of school construction and major maintenance projects and publicizes and puts into action regulations governing programs that operate under Title 14 of the Alaska Statutes, including public schools, early childhood and child care programs, and state libraries and museums. State Board members are appointed by the governor, and the Board appoints an advisor representing the military community, a student advisor, and a student advisor-elect.

The Alaska Seamount Expedition brings together, scientists from many universities and research institutions to study several unexplored seamounts in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and try to understand how they formed and to determine their volcanic history. They will also characterize these unique habitats and explore the diverse communities of organisms such as fish and invertebrates that exist around these undersea mountains.

The student and teacher will assist with the collection of material for the NOAA Ocean Explorer Web site, through which the general public will be able to follow the expedition. A team of professional videographers will be present throughout the cruise with the goal of developing an expedition video. This cruise will also provide an educational platform for the North Pacific Fisheries Observer Training Center , as one observer trainer will join the cruise, as will their new Director, Peter Risse. There is also potential for an Observer Training video to be developed from the footage collected during the Alvin dives.

Note about General Circulation Models
This paper's discussion about possible futures and their implications was taken from different sources based on a variety of general circulation models (GCMs) but is particularly based on the results of the Hadley Centre and Canadian Centre model simulations used by the National Assessment process. GCMs are tools used by scientists to construct plausible estimates of potential changes in climate. It is generally agreed that these models provide reasonable estimates of changes at the global and latitudinal scale. However, for a variety of reasons, significant differences can exist on a regional scale between model outputs. Among these reasons are limits in the computational resources needed to resolve regional-scale topography and surface features. Because GCMs are coarse and do not accurately represent changes at the regional scale, caution should be used in interpreting the details of outputs from these models. However, until climate models that can resolve regional scales are available, these models offer the best “what if scenarios available for consideration of vulnerabilities to climate change.

Color map. general Chart of alaska to Accompany Reindeer Report by Sheldon Jackson, LL.D. general Agent of education in alaska, 1904. Baltimore A. Hoen Co.
    http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/russian/russch7.html
The Russian Church and Native Alaskan Cultures
    Native Education
Second in importance to the conversion of Native Alaskans was their education. On the founding of the first Russian colony on Kodiak Island in 1784, a school as well as a church was immediately established. Significantly, the school, supported by the Russian American Company, was bilingual, with studies in Russian and Kodiak (Eskimo). Bilingualism and the close connection between commerce and education were to be hallmarks of the educational system throughout the Russian American era and well into the American period. Undoubtedly the greatest educator in Russian America was Father Ioann Veniaminov, later Bishop Innokentii, who devised an alphabet for the Aleut language, expanded the educational system, and insisted that priests learn Native languages and customs. In 1841, he established the ecclesiastical seminary at Novoarkhangelsk (Sitka), which included coursework in Latin, trigonometry, navigation, medicine, and six years of Native languages. Local parish schools offered reading, writing, and arithmetic, Biblical history, penmanship, music, and, at times, as many as four languages simultaneously: Russian, Old Church Slavonic, English, and a Native language. Indeed, the stories of the many remarkable graduates of the Church system, mostly Creoles like the priest Iakov Netsvetov and the explorer-soldier Alexander Kashevarov, are among the most moving in the history of Russian America. The Russian American tradition of bilingualism is often contrasted with the American system, dominated by the Presbyterian minister Sheldon Jackson. Appointed the first Federal superintendent for public instruction in 1885, Jackson decreed that only English could be taught at schools. His antagonism toward the "Greek" church prevented his recognizing the unusual success of the bilingual Russian program, whose effects are still evident today.

(116 Kb Requires Adobe Acrobat) Smoking Prevalence Among American Indian or Alaska Native Women
    • In 1998, smoking prevalence was highest among American Indian or Alaska Native women (34.5 percent), intermediate among white women (23.5 percent) and black women (21.9 percent) and lowest among Hispanic women (13.8 percent) and Asian or Pacific Islander women (11.2 percent).
Reported smoking rates have varied widely among American Indian tribal affiliations and by geographic location. The type of cigarettes, manner of inhaling, and numbers of cigarettes smoked vary widely. Fifty-four percent of American Indians live in urban settings, and another large percentage live on rural reservations.
Data from 1994-1996 show that smoking prevalence was the highest among American Indian or Alaska Native women living in the northern plains (43.5 percent) and in Alaska (40.6 percent), intermediate among women living in the East (33.4 percent) and the Pacific coast (30.6 percent), and lowest among women living in the Southwest (18.6 percent). Current Population Survey data for 1992-1993 showed a higher smoking prevalence among Alaska Native women (46 percent) than among American Indian women in the continental United States (35 percent).
