FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the Baltimore Ecosystem Study 1. What is an ecosystem?
2. How is a city an ecosystem?

3. Why is this research so novel?

4. Why is research over long periods important to ecosystem ecology?
...
15. Why are Dr. Pickett and the Institute of Ecosystem Studies taking a leading role in this project?

What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is an area where living things interact with each other and their physical and chemical environment. How is a city an ecosystem? There are the same basic kinds of interactions in cities as in other ecosystems. But those interactions are greatly affected not only by the structures that people have built and the energy they import, but also by people’s cultures, behaviors, social organization and economy. So cities are just a somewhat more complicated kind of ecosystem, and new interactions among researchers will be required to understand cities as ecosystems. Ecologists, social scientists, economists, and engineers are all involved, along with city, county, state and national agencies. Interactions with the citizens and with community groups is also a big part of the success of an urban ecosystem study. Why is this research so novel?

Anchorage, Alaska is a modern city with more than 250,000 people. Scientists are studying ways to improve salmon runs into streams that flow through the city. Saving City Salmon
INTRO: As Alaska's cities get bigger, streams that once supported healthy runs of salmon now find themselves polluted, re-routed or otherwise altered. Chester Creek is one such stream. It flows through the center of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. As Doug Schneider reports in this week's Arctic Science Journeys Radio, a scientist who studied the creek offers suggestions to save the creek's city salmon. STORY: Photographs taken in the early 1900s show early day settlers harvesting salmon along Chester Creek, when it was still just a place in the vast Alaska wilderness. Today, Chester Creek is an urban salmon stream, set mid the hustle and bustle of Anchorage's 250,000 people. The creek begins high in the still undeveloped Chugach Mountains north of the city, but then quickly finds itself winding through the many neighborhoods, busy streets, and business parks of the city's midtown section. Ultimately, the stream empties into Westchester Lagoon, an artificial lake created by a small dam and culvert system near the mouth of the creek. Culverts allow the water to flow from the lagoon into the nearby ocean.

A jury Monday ordered Allvest Inc.to pay more than $80,000 in actual damages plus $1 million in punitive damages to five women who were sexually harassed or assaulted by a guard at an Anchorage halfway house operated by the company. The jury found Allvest guilty of negligence in the hiring, screening, training and supervising of J.C. Lewis Jr. "There was no record that Allvest checked any references," said Les Syren, a lawyer for the women. The state settled its part of the case earlier this month, agreeing to pay a total of $45,000 to the five women, Syren said. (AP) Fort Greely

The cash-strapped city of Delta Junction has a $1 million debt due soon for its settlement of a private prison lawsuit and is lobbying the state to foot the bill. "The city does not have the funds necessary to meet this obligation," Delta Junction Mayor Roy Gilbertson said in a letter sent to state legislators earlier this session.

ALASKA Welcome traveler
to an Alaskan state of mind Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 for 2 cents an acre. Alaska was admitted to the Union as the 49th state on January 3, 1959. This state is one-fifth the size of the rest of the United States. Alaska's 378,242,560 acres are three times that of France. Alaska is the most sparsely populated state in the Union, with about 1.3 square miles (3.4 km) for every person. The total population is approximately 606,000. Alaska is bounded on the north by the Artic Ocean and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. To the east is the land mass of northern Canada and to the west the Bering Sea separates Alaska from Siberia, Russia by 55 miles. Two extensive mountain systems span the Alaskan mainland, and 17 of the 20 highest mountains in the United States are in the 49th state. It has 3 million lakes, 5,000 glaciers and 29 volcanoes. The regional and climate variations in this state are great. The maritine climate of the Aleutian Islands, which stretch a thousand miles across the North Pacific, is dramatically different than the bitter cold winters and hot summers of the continental climate of Alaska's interior. There are 226 tribes in Alaska, with 7 major Native groups: Tsimpshian; Tlingit; Haida; Athabaskan; Inupiaq; Yup'ik and Aleut.
