Happy Birthday, Alaska!
As winter deepens, invite students to go on a WWW tour of the nation's largest state. What better way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Alaskan statehood? NOTE: Be sure to check out this week's LESSON PLANNING story. There you'll find three Alaska Scavenger Hunts , one each for students in grades 1-3, 4-6, and 7-12. January 3rd marked the 40th anniversary of Alaskan statehood… What do your students know about the 49th state? Have they seen pictures of the Northern Lights? the Arctic tundra? the tidewater glaciers? Are they aware of the state's beauty, its wildlife, its grandeur, its diversity? Do they think Alaska is populated only by Eskimos and polar bears, or do they realize that most Alaskans live in modern homes, shop in modern stores, eat at fast food restaurants, and visit theaters, art galleries, and museums? Do they know that more than 1 million tourists visit the state each year and that the tourist industry is Alaska's second largest employer? Do they understand why northern Alaska is called

Basic Hunter Education
The Basic Hunter Education (HE) courses provide training in firearms safety, wildlife conservation, as well as, respect for our natural resources, landowners, and other hunters. Graduates receive lifetime certification recognized by all states, Canadian provinces and Mexico. Since originating in about 1950, nearly 30 million students have completed the Basic Hunter Education training in the United States. Conclusive evidence shows that the HE course has dramatically reduced hunting related firearms accidents — up to 75% in some states — and has brought about positive change in hunter skills, attitudes and behavior. The Board of Game passed regulations requiring that hunters born after January 1, 1986 must be HE certified to legally hunt in units 7, 13, 14, 15 and 20 beginning August 1, 2002. In addition, Hunter Education certification is required before anyone may legally hunt in the following areas in Alaska: A) the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge and B) the Mendenhall Wetlands near Juneau. The Basic Hunter Education certificate is valid in any state where hunter education is required to purchase a license.

You may locate any school or school district in your state by going to the following search engine: http://www.asd.com/ The Alaska Constitution guarantees a free education for all school-age children. Alaska's schools are governed as follows: the seven-member State Board of Education, appointed by the governor, sets education policy and appoints a commissioner of education. Two additional board members, representing the military community and students, have advisory votes. Alaska's public schools are organized within 54 school districts or Regional Educational Attendance Areas. A separate elected school board sits at the head of each district. Local boards work within state guidelines to determine hiring procedures, curriculum and basic policies for their district. The Home Page for the Alaska Department of Education is located at:

Several agencies have partnered together to create the Alaska Nurse Alert System (ANAS). The goal of the ANAS is to establish a network of volunteer nurses who will prepare for and be able to respond to natural and manmade disasters or emergencies, including acts of terror, bioterrorism, earthquakes, and other unforeseen events in Alaska. ANAS will work with state and local agencies to identify volunteer opportunities and to match volunteers with experiences that fit their interests and skills. The Alaska Board of Nursing encourages you to learn more about the ANAS by visiting the website for the Alaska State Nurses Association.

Overview of Social Work Licensure in Alaska
Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners: www.dced.state.ak.us/occ/pcsw.htm Purpose of Social Work Licensure The licensure of professional social workers protects the health, safety and well being of Alaskans through the effective regulation of individuals using the title “social worker” by setting requirements for social work education, professional preparation and continuing education, establishing ethical standards for licensed social workers and offering consumers a legal recourse in the event of unethical or damaging social work services. Hiring qualified, licensed social workers also promotes increased accountability in social service delivery. Multi-Level Social Work Licensure Multi-level licensure regulates the practice of all professional social workers by licensing at the bachelor’s, master’s and clinical levels. The three levels of licensure in Alaska include:
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW): The LCSW holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) or a Doctorate (DSW) from a college or university approved by the licensing board, and has two years post-MSW

"This document is one of many that represents the status of Alaska Native schools operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. I think of these as snapshot documents which are important for helping to understand the concerns and directions of policy makers at this crucial juncture in Alaska Native education. The timeline included is one of the better ones in high lighting important events in Alaska Native schooling." - Paul Ongtooguk THE EDUCATION PROGRAM OF THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS IN ALASKA All of the education programs conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Alaska are for the purpose of providing enriched opportunities for Native people to achieve academic, vocational, and social skills necessary for equal participation as productive citizens of Alaska. In carrying out the various education programs in 53 villages, two Alaska Boarding schools, and several schools outside of Alaska, the Bureau cooperates closely with the State of Alaska to make sure that prescribed standards of education are met or exceeded. This includes standards of school construction, school plant management, textbooks and teaching aids, curriculum content, teacher qualifications, in-service training, supervision, and other phases of school operation. Representatives of the Bureau of Indian Affairs participate on the Governor's Committee to develop and revise the OVERALL EDUCATION PLAN FOR RURAL ALASKA. The Bureau operates within the framework of this plan.
