Alabama women's prison last in nation that still completely segregates HIV inmates Associated Press - March 18, 2004
Samira Jafari, Associated Press Writer WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - When she's released from prison, Bonita Graham wants to get a job, get her children back and stay off drugs. But being HIV-positive keeps her from learning job skills at Julia Tutwiler Prison in Wetumpka, the nation's last that completely segregates inmates who carry the virus. Graham, a 26-year-old mother of two, and the 12 other HIV-infected female prisoners are confined to Dorm 8, barred from taking the vocational classes available to the state's thousands of other prisoners. Like most of her cellmates, Graham said living in Dorm 8 could be a rehabilitative experience if they could join the other prisoners to take the classes. But Graham and others also find an upside to Dorm 8. "For me, I wouldn't like to live in population," said Graham, who's serving 18 months for robbery. "I would like to go out in classes or trade school and whatever classes they have available that population gets and be living in our dorm." That's because Dorm 8 is the most spacious room in a prison system that has struggled with overcrowding for more than a decade. The 13 women who serve time in the dorm enjoy television, a DVD player, telephones, microwave, a bookshelf stocked with encyclopedias and, most recently, a computer.

Posted on: 01/12/2001 Grading Technical and Vocational Schools How do you decide which hvacr program will provide the best results? Whenever you are choosing a school, whether it be for a traditional college degree or for a technical education, there are many issues you need to look into. Here are some places where you can find technical training. Explore these options and decide which one will benefit you for your future career path. WHERE TO GO:
  • Vo-Tech Schools: These schools are almost always at the high school level and incorporate regular secondary education with vocational education. Apprenticeship Programs: These programs can be taken at the union or non-union level. It is mandatory to work for an employer while taking classes through either type of program. This helps, because you make money while you learn. The union apprenticeships will help you find an employer to work for and will usually include benefits. Also, when you join a union apprenticeship, you become a union member. Non-union apprenticeships are commonly held through a local hvacr chapter such as the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). In a non-union apprenticeship, you must find an employer to hire you and send you to the training.

The Coordinating Board of Higher Education was authorized in 1972 and carries out many of these functions. Most components of the state's public universities were established in the nineteenth century, grouped as state entities in the twentieth century by various reorganization plans. Interested researchers should also consult Department of Higher Education materials maintained in the State Government Documents collection. Record Group 106: Department of Higher Education, State Anatomical Board, 1897-1971 In 1887, the General Assembly authorized anatomy professors in state schools to form a board for the distribution and delivery of dead human bodies, unclaimed, to the various schools teaching anatomy. Each month, local boards (St. Louis, Kansas City, Kirksville, St. Joseph, Columbia) forwarded to the board secretary a list of all bodies received. The list includes name of deceased, sex, race, where body was received from, date of receipt, date and place of distribution. These reports can be found in the
