Tennessee last in South for national teacher certification
ATHENS (AP) - A lack of financial incentives and a time-consuming process are keeping more Tennessee teachers from becoming certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, educators say. As a result, Tennessee is last among Southern states in the number of teachers who have earned National Board certification. In 2003, just 28 teachers were certified, bringing the state's total to 91. In Georgia, 513 teachers earned certification from the National Board during 2003, bringing that state's total to 1,321. Georgia is ranked seventh nationally and fifth among Southern states. Alabama is ranked 10th nationally with 633 board-certified teachers. Linda Cheek, a third-grade teacher at Ingleside Elementary in Athens, became the only teacher in the Athens City School District to become certified when she completed the rigorous process in 1998.

Overview
Partners
Description
The project has three main objectives. They are to:
  • Infuse the concepts of modeling and visualization in existing teaching methodology courses for the K-12 curriculum, thus providing training for all students in the pre-service program. Develop a mathematics modeling course taught by mathematics department faculty and required of all secondary mathematics and science pre-service teachers. Develop and implement a new course in advanced topics for students who wish to complete a senior research project using modeling and visualization.
The project team is comprised of faculty from the UAB School of Education, the UAB mathematics department, the staff from ASPIRE, and faculty in the computer science department at UAH.
Timeline
The goal is to affect systemic change in 3 years:
Year 1 - September 2000 to October 2000
The development of a curriculum that infuses modeling and visualization begins in Year 1 with a review of the existing ASPIRE curriculum and appropriate software, training of UAB School of Education faculty, and piloting of selected modeling and visualization software.
