The Cullman Times FAIRVIEW — Three more Cullman County teachers have joined the ranks of
National Board Certified Teachers. Sherry Bailey, Jacqueline Hill and Pamela Livingston received notification of their certification shortly before Thanksgiving. Tammy McMinn, a former Fairview Middle School teacher who now teaches in the Blount County school system, also earned certification. Hill decided to go through the year-long certification process to see if she could do it. “I saw it as a personal challenge,” Hill said. The process was beneficial to Hill. “I learned where I need to improve. It really helped me pick apart my own thinking,” she said. “Some of the questions they ask really made me think.” Unless someone has gone through this process, Hill said, it’s difficult to understand. “Even if I didn’t pass, it was still worth it,” she said. “I’m ecstatic I did pass. I grew so much as a teacher.” Hill teaches third grade at Fairview Elementary School. Bailey teaches eighth-grade English and career development at Fairview Middle School.

Foreign Language Teacher Certification. ERIC Digest.
Typically, beginning foreign language (FL) teachers in the United States must complete an "approved program" of teacher education in a four-year college or university, have a certain minimum grade point average, and complete a specified number of credit hours in the foreign language to be certified. To receive "approved program" status, institutions must demonstrate to their state department of education that they are fulfilling state standards. Most states model their standards after two statements developed by the FL teaching profession in the 1950s and '60s titled, QUALIFICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES and GUIDELINES FOR TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (Paquette 1966). The QUALIFICATIONS are brief descriptions of "minimal," "good," and "superior" competence in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, applied linguistics, culture and civilization, and pedagogy. The GUIDELINES describe model programs, using the QUALIFICATIONS as minimum objectives (Wing 1984).
