Alabama State Flag, Facts, Map and Symbols Alabama: The Yellowhammer State Capital City: Montgomery Location: 32.35440 N, 086.28428 W Bird: Yellowhammer, adopted in 1927. This member of the woodpecker family, also called a flicker (Colaptes Aratus), got its name from the way it hammers trees with its beak and the flash of yellow it displays on the underside of its wings. The bird's colors of gray and yellow were said to resemble the uniform of a Confederate cavalryman, and an Alabama regiment of the Confederate Army wore yellowhammer feathers in their hats. These stories and the widespread abundance of the species led to the yellowhammer's selection as the state bird. Border States: Florida - Georgia - Mississippi - Tennessee Coastline: 53 mi. Coat of Arms: A shield carrying flags of the five nations that have held sovereignty over Alabama—Spain, France, Great Britain, and the Confederacy. The union binding these flags is the shield of the United States in the center. The crest of the Coat of Arms, atop the shield, is the ship "Badine" which brought French colonists who established the first permanent white settlement in Alabama. The shield is supported by two American bald eagles on either side. Below the shield is a scroll with the state motto in Latin. Surrounding all are two concentric circles, within which are the words, " Coat of Arms." here for details ~ ~ ~ General Information ~ ~ ~ The Shire of Glynn Rhe is a local chapter of an international organization dedicated to the research and recreation of pre-17th century European history called the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). It is a not for profit, educational organization wherein the members learn from "hands on" participation and conduct classes and/or demonstrations where they teach others what they have learned. Geographically, the organization is divided into regions, or kingdoms as they are called in the Society. Glynn Rhe is located in the heart of the Kingdom of Meridies . Meridies contains the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, nearly all of the states of Georgia and Arkansas and the panhandle of Florida, and small portions of both Kentucky and Virginia. The shire of Glynn Rhe covers the area of Morgan and Limestone counties in North Alabama. Our local group meets Wednesday evenings in the meeting room of the Wheeler Basin Regional Library in Decatur, Alabama, at 7:00 pm. These meetings include a brief business meeting, discussions of upcoming events, medieval arts and crafts workshops, and lots of fun! If you are interested in joining the SCA, or just in finding out more about us, please drop in and introduce yourself, or contact our Seneschale for more information. ( Map and Directions to the Business Meeting For those interested in the art of Medieval war craft, we hold weekly fighter practices, weather and events permitting, at Delano Park in Decatur, Alabama. Our fighter practices typically start around 1:00 p.m. and last for 3 or 4 hours. Actual schedules for fighter practices are announced at the weekly business meetings on Wednesday nights. Everyone is welcome to attend and watch as the fighters, dressed in armor and bearing rattan swords and shields, work to improve their prowess on the field of battle. It is truly an amazing and entertaining thing to watch! If you would be interested in trying it for yourself the group has armor and equipment available for loan.
