Photographs from university faculty and from private individuals and organizations, those that document UAB and the history of the health sciences, are also collected to augment the university's official pictorial history. Also collected are photographs often included within series of university records or within manuscript collections. These photographs are removed from the paper files for preservation purposes by archives staff. All photograph collections are assigned a collection identification number, with the letter "P" preceding the number for designation as a collection of photographs. SISTER LIBRARIES:
A WHITE HOUSE MILLENNIUM COUNCIL PROJECT
The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and Sister Cities International have embarked on a major initiative, Sister Libraries: A White House Millennium Council Project. The initial goal is for public and school libraries in the United States to pair with others worldwide, focusing on programs specifically planned for children and teenagers. Participating libraries, such as the ones listed here, receive recognition and designation as official White House Millennium Council Sister Libraries, but the project does not provide funds for staff, equipment or materials. Many Sister Libraries are in locations that are already affiliated through Sister Cities International, an organization for sister city, county and state programs in the United States. SCI is the official agency that links communities from the United States with communities worldwide. The Sister Library programs will do much to encourage multicultural exchange and broaden international understanding enabling young people to appreciate more fully their own place in, and impact on, the world of today and tomorrow! In October, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation awarded Professor Mary Ann Glendon the inaugural Bradley Prize. The $250,000 prize is given to individuals who support "the promotion of liberal democracy, democratic capitalism and a vigorous defense of American institutions," according to Michael W. Grebe, president and CEO of the Bradley Foundation. "I was quite overwhelmed by this news, and grateful to be honored in such company as Charles Krauthammer, Thomas Sowell and my University of Chicago college classmate Leon Kass," said Glendon, referring to the three other winners of the prize. Ogletree Honored by Charter School

A Cambridge charter school committed to teaching math and science to minority students has named its new library and media center after Professor Charles Ogletree Jr. ' 78 and his wife, Pamela. In its announcement, officials from the Benjamin Banneker Charter School said they hope that the Charles and Pamela Ogletree Library and Media Center will serve students as an information source about African-American figures and careers in the sciences. The Ogletrees have been supporters of the Banneker school since its inception in 1992. The school's namesake is an 18th-century African-American science and math scholar. Mack Delivers Hugo Black Lecture
Assistant Professor Kenneth Mack '91 gave the Hugo Black Lecture last fall at the University of Alabama School of Law, an annual event named for the late Supreme Court justice. The talk, titled "The Relationship Between the Legal Realist and Civil Rights Movements," outlined the differencesand the surprising commonalitiesin each movement's advocacy of the 14th Amendment to advance civil rights in the era of racial segregation. "The pragmatic legal method of the realists had more in common with the legal consciousness of the nation's civil rights lawyers than is generally presumed," said Mack.
