Official Alabama Outdoor Drama
The Miracle Worker
In 1962, the first production of William Gibson's drama, The Miracle Worker , was performed on the grounds of Ivy Green. Ivy Green was the birthplace of Helen Keller. The house is listed on the national register of historic places. Visitors gather in Tuscumbia each June for the annual, week-long Helen Keller Festival. The celebration includes a parade through downtown, stage entertainment, arts and crafts, an art auction, tour of historic sites, puppet shows, a variety of sports tournaments, and athletic events. The festival also marks the beginning of the outdoor performances of William Gibson's The Miracle Worker . The play is performed each summer from the end of June through July on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. on the Ivy Green grounds. The play relates the story of Helen Keller's early life and her teacher Anne Sullivan. Located on a 640 acre tract in historic Tuscumbia, Ivy Green was built in 1820 by David Keller, grandfather of Helen Keller. The main house is of Virginia cottage construction, with four large rooms on the first floor bisected by a wide hall. Each room boasts an individual fireplace. Upstairs are three rooms connected by a hall. The birthplace cottage is situated east of the main house and consists of a large room and play room. The home and museum rooms are decorated with much of the original furniture of the Keller family. The Miracle Worker became the State Outdoor Drama in 1991 by Act no. 91-37.

Alabama information
Once a prototype of the slow-to-change South, Alabama now exhibits a modern style and a cultural diversity that may surprise first-time visitors. While there are gracious antebellum mansions and Civil War sites to explore and fields of fluffy cotton and red, pink, and white azaleas to delight the eye, there are 21st-century wonders as well. After all, what other state can boast a space center, the country's only Mercedes-Benz visitors' center, some of the best beaches in the country, and a nationally-renowned Shakespearean theater? Alabama became a state in 1819 but the first European explorers "discovered" it when the Spanish sailed into Mobile Bay in 1519. The French were the first to establish a permanent settlement, however, in 1711 at Mobile.

Sassy Southern belle
Mobile entices suitors with museums, historic sites and plenty of charm By Lynn Edge
Published: Jul/Aug 2000 Over the almost 300 years of her history, this belle has had many suitors. The French, British, Spanish, Confederate and American flags all have flown over Mobile. Through the years, however, Mobile has not so much sought out history as history has sought out Mobile. It was in Mobile that the non-stop party known as Mardi Gras began. It was Mobile that gave birth to Henry Aaron, the man who swung for the fences more than 700 times and, in 1974, took from Babe Ruth the home run king crown. And it is Mobile, with her delightful mix of old and new, that draws thousands of visitors each year. Through her museums and historic sites, this belle of the bay shares the story of her life with those who come to call. The fort is more than a welcome center and museum. There are cannons and costumed re-creators to guide visitors through the Mobile of the early 18th century before they send them out into the 21st century. That all changed with the revitalization project spearheaded by Main Street Mobile. The street of shops, museums, restaurants and arts venues is anchored by Cathedral Square and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (10 South Claiborne St., 334-434-1565). The impressive structure, designed by Claude Beroujon, has been in use since 1850. The sanctuary is open to visitors from 8:15 a.m. to noon and from 12:45 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Mobile AL
Mobile offers many museums and historic homes and sites for residents and visitors alike. As befitting an almost 300-year-old community, Mobile celebrates its rich heritage and diversity.
The Museum of the City of Mobile
will soon be moving into the larger facilities of the old city hall building near the waterfront. Visitors can view exhibits on African-American contributions to the city's growth, colonial and Civil War artifacts, Mardi Gras and other facets of the city's history. The city also maintains the Phoenix Fire Museum, one of the area's first firehouses, and Carlen House, a restored mid-1800s Creole Cottage.
The Mobile Museum of Art
features a permanent collection of more than 4,000 pieces, traveling and temporary exhibits, educational programs and a lecture series. It has two locations, the main gallery on the shore of Langan Park Lake in west Mobile and the downtown gallery in the Arts District. Currently the main gallery's collection can be at the Mobile Civic Center, while the Langan Park location is undergoing a $5 million renovation.
The Mobile Medical Museum includes the largest collection of medical artifacts in the Southeast, reflecting 200 years of medical history.

"It was the scene of a lot of the hustle and bustle at the height of the civil rights movement," said the Rev. Michael Thurman, the pastor at King's former church, now known as the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. The house was bombed in 1956, with Coretta Scott King, the Kings' young daughter and a church member inside. No one was injured. Associated Press : Thomas McPherson is vice president of a group working to restore this house, where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in Montgomery, Ala. Thomas McPherson, vice president of a foundation formed a year ago to raise money to restore the house, said the building was used as a parsonage until 1994 and has been empty since then.
