USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park
USS Alabama began her combat service augmenting the British Fleet protecting convoys on the "Murmansk Run" from England through the North Sea to Russia against German warships and aircraft. Alabama was credited with shooting down 22 Japanese planes. Her radar was the first to detect enemy bombers in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, at the unprecedented range of 190 miles. This warning enabled U.S. fighters and anti-aircraft gunners to destroy over 400 Japanese planes. Decommissioned in 1947, Alabama was "mothballed" in Bremerton, Washington until 1964, when she was transferred to the State of Alabama and towed 5,600 miles to become a memorial in Mobile . The Park's artifact collection contains representative Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard aircraft from before World War II through the Persian Gulf War. Included are a Mach 3+ A-12 Blackbird, the submarine Drum, tanks and artillery. Lowest rates and Free candid reviews for Mobile at Tripadvisor.com. Read opinions from travelers like you. In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a "seminary of learning." Alabama was admitted to the Union on March 2, 1819, and a second township added to the grant. On December 18, 1820, the seminary was established officially and named "The University of the State of Alabama."
Tuscaloosa, then the state's capital, chosen as the University's home.
On April 18, inaugural ceremonies held and the University opened. By May 28, 52 students had enrolled. The campus consisted of seven buildings: two faculty houses, two dormitories, the laboratory, the hotel (now Gorgas House ), and the Rotunda.
The University of Alabama becomes the first in the state to offer engineering classes. It was one of the first five in the nation to do so and one of the few to have maintained accreditation continuously since national accreditation began in 1936.
President's Mansion completed. Its first occupant: Basil Manly, University president from 1837 to 1855.

The Alabama Council on Economic Education (ACEE), a private nonprofit organization, has the mission of improving economic education in Alabama schools. ACEE provides training to educators on how to effectively teach economic concepts and provides reusable classroom resource materials. Over the career of a typical educator, elementary teachers reach approximately 600 students while middle school/high school teachers reach approximately 3,250 students. Each year, over 16,000 teachers from all over the State receive materials and assistance from ACEE. By training educators and providing materials, ACEE can reach a substantial number of students and have a substantial impact on enhancing economic literacy in Alabama.
ACEE provides its programs through nine Centers for Economic Education located at The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham , Athens State College, Auburn University, Troy State University, University of South Alabama, Jacksonville State University, University of North Alabama, and the University of Montevallo.
Research indicates that students taught by ACEE-trained educators test TWO grade levels higher in economics than students taught by non-ACEE-trained educators. Additionally, students taught by ACEE-trained educators utilizing ACEE materials demonstrate strengthened skills in language, arts, mathematics and analytical thinking skills.
