Look To Chicago For New Industry
Economic developers from across North Alabama took their message to Chicago this week in an effort to bring new industry to North Alabama.
The North Alabama Industrial Development Association (NAIDA) sponsored a luncheon in Chicago at the Metropolitan Club of The Sears Tower on Monday, April 28, 2003. Site selection consultants and industry executives from the Chicago area were invited to meet with the North Alabama Team.
Cullman County Economic Development Director Randall Shedd introduced Congressman Robert Aderholt to the group.
“North Alabama is fortunate to have strength in the United States Congress. Both North Alabama members of Congress are on the powerful Appropriations Committee along with Chattanooga’s Congressman Zac Wamp, whose family is from Cullman County," Shedd said.

Search Focused Industry Training Gov. Bob Riley was joined by workforce development officials and a representative from Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa County plant today to announce a new initiative that helps train adults for existing jobs that become vacant when workers leave them for employment at Alabama's growing automotive industry. The new Focused Industry Training (FIT) program will provide training and job placement services at 34 sites across the state, concentrated in areas around Alabama's automotive manufacturing plants. "We are seeing a gap in the number of skilled workers available for existing industries when their employees leave for jobs in the auto industry," Gov. Riley said. "This new effort will increase the pool of skilled workers who can take these newly vacant jobs, boost their careers and sustain Alabama's economic growth." The job training will be conducted by personnel from 13 of Alabama 's two-year community and technical colleges. The FIT sites are concentrated in the Northeast Corridor around Lincoln, home of the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama plant; in West Alabama around the Mercedes-Benz USI plant; and, along the Interstate 65 corridor north and south of Montgomery, home to Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's soon-to-be completed plant.

Agriculture: Alabama's No. 1 Industry
There are 48,000 people in Alabama who call themselves farmers. And for generations those few families have dedicated their lives to creating a $4.7 billion business—Alabama's largest.
But today, agriculture reaches far beyond the farm gate. Alabama's agribusiness industries account for 476,000 jobs with annual earnings of more than $9 billion. That's 21 percent of the state's workforce. In fact, 85 percent of all jobs created by agriculture are not on the farm at all. They include farm equipment dealers, seed and feed suppliers, food processors, exporters and retailers.
Together, these industries account for more than $43 billion or 22 percent of the state's direct output—more than any other industry.
