Education Roanoke City Schools I t is a well-known condition of contemporary life that most communities balk at new taxes, even for so vital a function as education. Yet, in Roanoke, the City Council conducted several surveys and received an overwhelmingly positive response to enacting a one-cent sales tax for school building construction and renovation. The result has been the construction of a new middle school and the renovation of several existing buildings. A t Roanoke City Schools , we are proud of our achievement in state standardized test scores. The Alabama High School Basic Skills Exit Examination is required of all students in order to graduate from high school. Handley High School recently received a first-time takers' pass rate of 94% in reading, and 92% in both language and mathematics, which is unusually high for any Alabama High School. On the state test given to all students completing Algebra I, our students scored the third highest in all of Alabama and, on the writing assessment given to all fifth graders in Alabama, our students' scores were among the highest in all of Alabama. A ll students in Alabama from grade three through eleven take the Stanford Achievement Test, Edition 9. This test is normalized nation-wide. In all grades, Roanoke students scored above the national average, with some categories being as high as the 82

This page lists some of the statistical information as well as information that includes local educational institutions, lodging, restaurants, and more; all located within the Bessemer area.
For the year 2000, Bessemer's civilian labor force grew to 14,669, the largest total since 1995. For the year, the city's unemployment rate was 5.6%, the third lowest annual average since the 1970's. Commercial and industrial construction activity approached $30 million, due in part to major developments at Perimeter Industrial Park and the Alabama Industrial Center. The absorption rate of industrial space continued to increase during 2000, with three business parks reaching capacity (no available lots remaining). The city's newest business park, Morgan Industrial Park established in 1996, now has just six lots remaining. Plans are underway to develop a new 200+ acre business park during 2001 to meet demand. Correlation of the GLOBE Program to Higher Order Thinking Skills and the State of Alabama Education Requirements Download OBJECTIVES FOR GLOBE in Alabama TEACHER WORKSHOPS GLOBE in Alabama promotes quality content and quality instruction in science classrooms.
  • The GLOBE Program offers a framework for the use of higher order thinking skills. Teachers who have received training in a thinking skills approach are given an immediate direct way to implement these skills. For teachers who have not received such training, the GLOBE teacher training workshops give an overview and implementation options for strategies for instruction of thinking skills to students. The workshops provide instruction in the basic science concepts related to the GLOBE Program, as well as instruction in the proper way to take the scientific measurements. Current ideas and information relating to the environment are presented to teachers. A wide variety of resources which can be used for teaching the environment at the high school level are provided. Alabama schools are working hard to improve students achievement in science, as measured by several objective means. GLOBE in Alabama workshops are closely aligned with the relevant standards.
