Montgomery, May 3, 2004 – As the nation celebrates Law Week and the 50th anniversary of the landmark “Brown v. Board of Education” decision that ended segregation in schools, Alabama students shared their thoughts through creative expressions of art or the imagery of the written word. Judges of the Alabama State Bar’s Law Day 2004 competition came away with a vivid impression of what “equality under the law” means to Alabama’s youth. Montgomery’s Booker T. Washington Magnet School shared top honors in the statewide essay contest with Hartselle Jr. and Sr. High Schools. Birmingham’s Advent Day School, Huntsville’s Monrovia School and Dalraida Elementary of Montgomery were poster contest winners. The judges gave a special award for originality this year to Dalraida sixth-grader Travis Miller for his “Neapolitan America” poster featuring actual ice cream cones. Visitors to the bar’s Web site at www.alabar.org can view all the winning posters and essays under the PUBLIC link. MOver 180 posters and 40 essays focused on this year’s Law Day theme of “EQUALITY UNDER LAW: Brown v. Board of Education at 50.” In addition to members of the Alabama State Bar Law Day Committee, celebrity judges this year included Michael Briddell, of WSFA-TV; Jessica Walker, Montgomery Advertiser reporter; Volunteer Lawyer Program director, Linda Lund; Birmingham News reporter Stan Bailey, Montgomery County Bar executive director Suzanne Duffey, Col. Ted Fink, Judge Advocate Group, Maxwell AFB and Raymond Zicarelli, FBI, Mobile Division.
