GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY IN NEW CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS
New state-level curriculum frameworks have emphasized geography and history as core subjects of the social studies sequence of courses, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. In 1990, for example, the Florida Commission on Social Studies Education published CONNECTIONS, CHALLENGES, CHOICES, which presents the objectives, subjects, topics, and rationale for the state of Florida's new social studies curriculum for grades K-12. This Florida curriculum document emphasizes this central theme: "We recommend the adoption of a K-12 social studies program of study that... emphasizes history and geography (1990, 3). The Florida Commission on Social Studies Education went along with a trend initiated by THE HISTORY-SOCIAL SCIENCE

http://www.yellowhammerpress.com/lplans/introactivity.htm
A Yellowhammer Lesson Plan Alabama’s Geography: An Introductory Activity Written by: Dianne Wills Description: This is a first-day activity that I used with my Alabama History students to introduce them to their state’s geography. I explained at the beginning that this is a fun activity that would not be graded except for participation. This activity will also acquaint your students with the map portfolios suggested in The Alabama Journey ’s teacher materials in Chapter 1. Goals: To introduce students to Alabama’s geography To give students a better knowledge of their state’s geography Procedure: Give each student a blank sheet of paper. (I got mine from the recycling bin.) Explain that the first thing they are to do is draw an outline map of Alabama ( a big one that covers most of the page ) WITHOUT LOOKING at a map. After the outline is complete, ask them to place a star on the spot where they think Alabama’s capital is located and to label it. Next, have them label the state north of Alabama, then label the other states that touch Alabama. You may also want to add the Gulf of Mexico.)

http://www.southalabama.edu/geography Geology is the study of Earth, its composition, and the forces that form and change it. As such, it encompasses a broad spectrum of studies and draws from the other basic sciences: chemistry, physics, and biology. Meteorology is the study of atmospheric phenomena and the processes that cause weather. The science of meteorology is firmly rooted in basic physical laws governing mass, momentum, and energy. Many weather processes are simulated by complex computer models; however, accurate weather analysis and forecasting often requires meteorologists to identify and conceptualize weather patterns often missed by automated techniques.

Professional:
Thanks for stopping by. I am a graduate of Florida State University and attended graduate school at the University of Florida. Since then I have been a faculty member in the Department of Geography at Auburn University . I enjoy working with students, and I have taught many different courses in my career. Take a look at the page for my Honors section of the course: Society, Culture, and the Environment . One of the more interesting things I have done with students has been to lead a summer study-abroad program in Latin America. I have worked on many projects and committess, and have recently served as the president of the local chapter of the AAUP . I am active in various regional organizations, such as the Alabama Geographic Alliance , the Alabama Latin Americanists Society , and various national professional associations. Here's my vitae , in case you may be interested. Latin America has been an important part of my life. I grew up in Brazil where I still have many friends and contacts. For several years I served as the Director of the Auburn University Institute for Latin American Studies , and I have been able to travel in most countries of the Western Hemisphere. My research interests have varied over the years. I have developed computer applications in geography, studied migration, delved into historical geography, and published works on geographic education. Most recently, in collaboration with my brother, I published a book through the University of Alabama Press titled "The Confederados." The book describes the events and consequenses of the migration of Americans from the Old South who, immediately after the Civil War, settled in Brazil. The migration had interesting consequences because some elements of the North American culture (such as the English language) still persist near the city of Americana, SP.
