Dog River and its tributaries drain most of Mobile, Alabama. Those tributaries range from relatively pristine streams to concrete lined drainage ditches to sluggish, sediment choked, tidal channels . As the city itself spreads out into the upper reaches of the watershed, poorly managed construction and the replacement of natural vegetation with impermeable surfaces contribute to the deterioration of water quality in Dog River. Sediment sewage , and trash are the major issues. This urban watershed empties into Mobile Bay, a National Estuary. Table at bottom of this page shows available Dog River reports. Click on the map below for a closer view of the watershed. "Back" returns to this page. As such, it encompasses a broad spectrum of studies and draws from the other basic sciences: chemistry, physics, and biology. Meteorology is the study of atmospheric phenomena and the processes that cause weather. The science of meteorology is firmly rooted in basic physical laws governing mass, momentum, and energy. Many weather processes are simulated by complex computer models; however, accurate weather analysis and forecasting often requires meteorologists to identify and conceptualize weather patterns often missed by automated techniques.

A Yellowhammer Lesson Plan Geography: “No Man is an Island” Written by: Dianne Wills “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” John Donne Description: This short activity used at the beginning of your introduction to Alabama’s geography will help your students see that they are all “connected” to the world. Using John Donne’s quote- “No man is an island,” first discuss the definitions of an island and continent, and then lead the discussion into the idea that we all must depend upon each other for survival and that we are all a “piece of the continent, a part of the main.” Goals: To introduce the idea that we cannot separate ourselves from others and be an “island” To introduce geographical terms, starting with “island” and “continent” Procedure: Before class, cut out “islands” from cardboard and give one island to each student as they come into the room. When you are ready to begin the introduction, ask students to guess what it is that you handed them. (A couple of the guesses I got were a cloud and “that little bubble above a cartoon character’s head to let us know what he was saying or thinking.”)

Alabama. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Alabama, "The Heart of Dixie"
Abbreviation:
AL The etymology of the word or name, Alabama, has evoked much discussion. It was the name of an Indian tribe (Alabama, Albama, Alebamon, Alibama, Alibamou, Alibamon, Alabamu, and Allibamou). Alabama possibly means "Here We Rest", but it could also mean "thicket clearers", Alabama being a compound of Alba meaning "a thick or mass vegetation," and amo meaning "to clear, to collect, to gather up." Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. From the early 19th century, Alabama's economy was dominated by cotton. However, although it is still an important crop, such as corn, peanuts, soybeans have taken over much of the former cotton lands. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, a comparatively rapid industrialization set in. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) program of hydroelectric power production, begun in the 1930s, fostered the growth of giant fertilizer, munitions, and aluminum industries. Alabama, known as "Heart of Dixie" occupies a central place in the history of the South. Montgomery, the Alabama capital, served as the first Confederate Capital during the Civil War. Tourists can visit Alabama's historic homes and gardens, reminiscent of the Old South. Also popular are the resorts and beaches on Dauphin Island, the Gulf Shore and Mobile Bay.

What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation make regions different and special. New England - including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams, Amherst, and Wesleyan - is unequaled by any other region. America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636. Without, however, large expanses of rich farmland or a mild climate, generations of exasperated New England farmers declared that the chief product of their land was stones. By 1750, many settlers had turned from farming to other pursuits. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.
