ALABAMA COURSE OF STUDY: GEOGRAPHY "This one-semester study of geography in the Seventh Grade emphasizes the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a geographic perspective. By the end of this course, students should understand the fundamental physical and human patterns on the Earth's surface as well as the processes that created these patterns. Representative areas of the world should be selected for detailed studies of the content standards. In this course students learn how to apply a geographic perspective to the past, present, and future. This Seventh Grade study of geography supports the study of world history in the Eighth and Ninth Grades as well as the study of U.S. history in the Tenth and Eleventh Grades. The six essential elements of geography are used to organize the content standards. Geographic skills and perspectives ( Geography for Life , 1994) are interwoven throughout the content standards." ( Alabama Course of Study Social Studies , Bulletin 1998, No 18, p. 72.) Geographic Elements The World in Spatial Terms The structuring of geographic information, the ordering of knowledge into real and mental maps, and the spatial analysis of that information.

The Alabama Geographic Alliance began in 1987 under the leadership of Dr. Howard Johnson, of Jacksonville State University, Dr. William Strong, of the University of North Alabama, and Dr. David Weaver, of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
The AGA has conducted 14 summer geography institutes, an advanced summer institute, two geography technology institutes, and numerous short-term workshops ranging from two hours to three days. Participants in these programs received instruction in geography content, teaching strategies, grant-writing, and use of multimedia in the classroom. Institute graduates have conducted more than a thousand in-service presentations to some 20,000 fellow teachers.

Welcome here to visit the ESRI web site.) Our initial data layers were extracted from the First Street program form Wessex. (Click here To classify the roads, we divided them into four divisions, Major Arterials, Major Streets, Parkways, and Collectors. Our method of classification based on these four division are: Major Arterials are Interstate Highways, Major Streets are State and Federal Routes, Parkways are major county roads and city streets which are used to travel from one area to another and not just to visit a location on the given street, and Collectors are all other streets, those that would only be traveled for a specific purpose and to a particular location on the street. The distinction between Parkways and Collectors is somewhat difficult in the adjoining counties, but we are satisfied with our classification of the Etowah County roads. For Etowah County roads only, we also have created a data field for the Functional Classification assigned by Alabama Department of Transportation. To use the route command in ARC/INFO, we created a table of turning movements and delay times, and assigned attributes to every intersection on the street network. We also created a new field in the streets attribute table to calculate time of travel from intersection to intersection based on distance and anticipated speed, with the speed being different for each classification of road in the network. This allows us the flexibility of having the command optimize the route based on either time or distance.
