Professional Development Systems:
A Simplified Framework with State Examples Return to: Good Start Grow Smart Popular Topics Online Library State Data/Contacts NCCIC Publications Recursos en Español For Parents For Providers For Goverment CCTAN
Comprehensive professional development systems for early care and education personnel are accessible and based on a clearly articulated framework; include a continuum of training and ongoing supports; define pathways that are tied to licensure, leading to qualifications and credentials; and address the needs of individual, adult learners. Enhancing a spirit of life-long learning is one goal of any professional development system; similar to this goal, a professional development system itself is never a finished product and should continually evolve and be refined to best meet the needs of the population it serves. Within professional development systems are several interconnected components. These components fall under five broad elements: 1) Funding, 2) Core Knowledge, 3) Qualifications and Credentials, 4) Quality Assurances, and 5) Access and Outreach. A one-page document that outlines and defines this simplified framework is available on the Web at http://nccic.org/pubs/goodstart/pdsystem.html

    SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT
    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Several items on the TLN pre-discussion online survey had some bearing on issues of professional development. About 150 TLN members completed the survey. More to the point, perhaps, are your comments about professional development during our general chat over the past month. Here are some excerpts (edited to assure anonymity) that are representative of the discussion so far. John Norton
TLN moderator WHAT YOU'VE SAID ABOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The atmosphere at our elementary school is changing. The impetus has been staff development training based on research. The clearest evidence is in two areas of the school: kindergarten and intermediate clusters. Our kindergarten team has students reading at the second grade level -independently reading trade books and passing the Accelerated Reader computer based assessment on the books. They still have students who started the year with huge deficits, and the teachers are collaborating to reach all the students - the high functioning and the high at-risk. The professional development training that has occurred over the last 2 years, primarily language arts and reading, is being effectively implemented in the K classes. The teachers' attitudes toward change and their personal dedication makes it work!
