In 1873, as the Lincoln Normal School, the institution was recognized as a state-supported institution for the education of African American ". . . teachers and students." The institution matured and gained the status of a four- year in 1928. The first baccalaureate degrees were conferred in 1931. The graduate program in education was authorized in 1940, and the first master's degrees were conferred in 1943. The college was an early member of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education NCATE) and remains accredited by that body.

http://bama.ua.edu/~zbt/Why Bama.htm
Back to Recruitment WHY THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA? The University of Alabama, the state's oldest public university, is the senior comprehensive doctoral-level institution in Alabama. Established by constitutional provision, with subsequent statutory mandates and authorizations, the University advances the intellectual and social condition of all the people of the state through quality programs of research, instruction, and service. Presently we are ranked among the Top 50 public universities in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and enrollment is just over 19,000. Last year UA ranked in the second tier of top universities overall along with other major public universities including Ohio State, Texas A&M, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia. UA is also included among "The 201 Best Colleges for the Real World" in terms of affordability of costs and employability of graduates.
At the undergraduate level, the University offers a comprehensive range of baccalaureate programs in the arts and humanities and in scientific, technological, preprofessional, and professional fields. A University-wide core curriculum provides a strong general education component as the keystone of every undergraduate program. Several factors at UA help to mitigate the impersonality typical of other mega-universities. Because Alabama is in the South, there is an overall friendliness between professors and students. As a freshman, you'll develop strong bonds with professors. This big school is also made to feel a little smaller by great student advisors. You can walk in anytime and get one to talk to you about your grades, progress, or problems. If you slip up and have a bad semester, they're there for you.

We are a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice to keep evolution in the science classroom and "scientific creationism" out. While there are organizations that oppose "scientific creationism" as part of their general goals (such as good science education, or separation of church and state), NCSE is the only national organization that specializes in this issue. When teachers, parents, school boards, the press and others need information and help, they turn to NCSE.
While most of NCSE's work involves defending evolution against attacks, we also work to increase public understanding of evolution and science "as a way of knowing." We also have programs to help teachers who want to improve their teaching of evolution. Here you'll find information and resources for all these activities.

The History of Concordia College
Concordia College, formerly known as Alabama Lutheran Academy and Junior College, is the direct result of the pioneer Lutheran missionaries in Alabama. In 1916 Miss Rosa Young, supremely concerned about the spiritual and educational welfare of the Black people in her native area, directed a plea for help to the Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. The conference responded favorably and sent the Rev. Nils Jules Bakke, who on Palm Sunday in 1916 performed 58 Baptisms and 70 confirmations in Rosebud, Alabama. Within a few years, more than 20 congregations were founded. In 1919 at a conference held in Midway, near Miller's Ferry, a resolution was adopted to petition the Synodical Conference for funds to build a school for the special purpose of training professional church workers. The location selected for the new school was Selma. The first classed were conducted in a rented cattage at 521 First Avenue, November 13, 1922. The Rev. R. O. Lynn was the first president. The first buildings on the present campus were dedicated by the Director of Missions, C. F. Drewes on September 20, 1925. One year later four females made up the school's first graduating class. God continued to bless this new Alabama school with capable leaders like Pres. Edward Wescott, who, in a long period of dedicated service to the school, made survival possible during the Great Depression.

Graduates of Concordias teacher education programs are required to be able to demonstrate that they know the content they will teach, that they know how children develop and learn, and that they know appropriate methods and materials to use in helping children learn. In addition, they must be able to demonstrate that they have the ability to use their knowledge in the classroom as effective teachers. July 17, 2003
By Carl Ferguson, Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research , The University of Alabama The Beacon Hill study: makes major erroneous assumptions on the use of new tax revenues that affects their results and conclusions ignores education as an investment
    Erroneous Assumptions
The study assumes that most of the new tax dollars will be spent on "health and welfare payments directed to the poorest segments of society," instead of being spent on education, economic development, infrastructure, and other essential public services as outlined in the tax reform and accountability package.
Further, the report states "In the model, the government of Alabama pays directly for some education, mainly the University of Alabama System."
    This is, of course, incorrect.
The authors fail to recognize that the State of Alabama provides the majority funding for all levels of education through the Education Trust Fund. These erroneous assumptions raise serious concerns about the overall design of the model.
The model's flawed design can also be seen in their employment forecasts. They report Alabama employment will grow 4.1 percent a year from 2004 to 2008 in both their baseline and tax scenario forecasts. Such growth rates would produce annual employment gains ranging from 82,192 in 2005 to 92,615 in 2008 for the tax scenario and even greater gains for the baseline forecast.
