Drawing upon an exhaustive literature review, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences recently called for a research-proven approach to teaching reading. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has called for an overhaul to reading preparation and concluded that teaching reading is “rocket science.” The AFT calls for teacher preparation that ensures teachers understand the content of instruction, use effective informal classroom assessments, and apply best practice in all aspects of reading instruction. The implications for teacher education and professional development are enormous. Teacher education programs that do not incorporate these reading standards should not be allowed to continue to prepare teachers. States must craft teaching policies that give teachers relicensure credits only in those areas proven to bring results, like the professional development associated with ARI. States should pay teachers more when they go through such training, even more when they change their teaching practices, and still more when they produce gains like those at West Blocton. Furthermore, while avoiding the tendency just to add more days for all teachers, states must provide structured time for teachers to have focused professional development required for initiatives such as ARI.
