The Alabama Association of School Boards welcomes you to its website! AASB is the official voice of the state's local school boards and other boards governing K-12 public education agencies. We are dedicated to improving educational opportunities for all Alabama public school students through the improvement of local lay education governance.
By pooling resources through its membership, AASB provides services which one school board could not economically provide alone. Boardmanship skills training, risk management programs and practical publications are among the many services provided to AASB members. In addition, AASB represents the interests of its members before the state Legislature, state Board of Education and other state and national agencies. We're pleased to add another dimension to our services with this website. Alabama Association of School Boards P.O. Drawer 230488

This Website was developed for the Alabama Department of Education by the Online Academy at the University of Kansas as a resource for institutions of higher education and local education agencies in Alabama as they implement the Academy modules. The resources include online modules; presentations developed by the Academy for faculty and technical staff responsible for implementation; opportunities for discussion among staff of participating institutions and agencies; and resource material shared by instructors or the Academy staff. The intent is to use this site to facilitate the efforts of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs in implementing the Academy modules. The site will be expanded as needed services and resources are identified as being helpful to institutions of higher education and school districts in Alabama as they implement the Academy modules.
The Online Academy is engaged in the business of providing e-learning solutions for the 21st century. The Academy develops Web-based modules and other technology innovations for moving validated educational research into actual classroom practice. The existing resources are designed to empower teachers and teacher educators in the areas of Reading, Technology, and Positive Behavioral Support. New content areas are being developed as needs are identified.
The Online Academy is a unit within the e-Learning Design Lab in the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas and is funded in part by the Office of Special Education Programs in the U.S. Department of Education.

    [26 June 99]:
Alabama Virtual Library: A VISION FOR ALABAMA
Most Alabama librarians have heard that the Alabama legislature appropriated $3,000,000 earmarked in the budget of the Alabama Public Library Service for the Alabama Virtual Library. Funding is for FY2000 which will be available October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000. Participants in the Alabama Virtual Library are the five state education agencies and their constituents:
    • Alabama Commission on Higher Education (Network of Alabama Academic Libraries) Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education (public two-year colleges) Alabama Public Library Service (public libraries) Alabama State Department of Education (public K-12 school systems) Alabama Supercomputer Authority (Alabama Research and Education Network and technical support for the AVL)
Each of the five state educational agency directors appointed three members to the Alabama Virtual Library Council which is charged to implement and manage the Alabama Virtual Library. At least one appointment by each agency represents the constituents served by the agency and one represents the agency. Members are:

Lawmakers in the full Alabama House gave approval to a 4-and-a-half billion dollar Education Trust Fund budget. Money ($40 million) is in there for the Alabama Reading Initiative and for lawmakers' projects in their respective districts. However, lawmakers cut funding for non-state agencies, museums and other educational programs that were once funded by the budget. One organization, AIDS Alabama, says Alabama school kids are the ones who will suffer for the cuts. WBHM's Steve Chiotakis spoke with the CEO of AIDS Alabama, Kathie Hiers. Hiers says her organization saw the cuts coming. And she says every year there is a debate about whether the funds for AIDS Alabama, about $250,000 would be cut. But she says her HIV/AIDS education initiative in schools all across the state is mandated by the state school superintendent and AIDS Alabama is the logical and economical choice in administering it, given the infection rate among young people. "We have almost two new infections in Alabama every single day. And about half of the new infections are young people," she says. "I shudder to think what the infection rates are going to go to if we don't provide this education in the public schools."
