Introduction
Food irradiation is a preservation process of exposing foods to high-energy rays to improve product safety and shelf life. Red meats, poultry, potatoes, onions, spices, seasonings, fresh fruits and vegetables may be irradiated to prevent growth of food poisoning bacteria, eliminate parasites, or delay ripening and spoilage. Also, irradiation could be used to replace chemical preservatives in foods. More than 40 years of research on food irradiation has shown that foods exposed to low levels of irradiation are safe and wholesome, and they retain high quality. Return to Table of Contents
Principles of Food Irradiation
Two different processes, gamma rays or electron beams, may be used to irradiate foods. Gamma radiation is used to preserve bulk quantities of food such as boxed, frozen chicken breasts or ground beef. With this method the food is processed at the food plant, packaged with oxygen-permeable film and transported to an irradiation facility. Currently the only commercial food irradiation facility approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is FOOD TECHnology Service, Inc. in Mulberry, Florida. At the irradiation facility, a conveyor transfers the palletized product to an irradiation chamber (

State Children's Health Programs
Region 4 Children's Environmental Health Program established a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) through regional land grant universities to develop state capacity in children's environmental health. CSREES contacts are listed below. Through this partnership, EPA and CSREES have conducted educational activities to increase awareness of children's environmental health hazards faced by our children. Education and outreach material addressing health hazards (displays, newsletters, curriculums, videos, etc.) are being utilized and distributed in over 80% of the counties in the region. CSREES also provides compliance assistance for EPA's lead program in all eight states. Three states have partnered with their Schools of Pharmacy to address childhood asthma. The 1890 - Traditional Black Land Grant Institutions are now involved in the partnership, focusing their efforts on under-served audiences. NC State has partnered with the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina to develop materials specific for Native American audiences. A number of states are also developing materials for Latino audiences.

Workforce development has been identified in both the private and public sector as a critical component of economic development. Initiatives to address the shortage of skilled, unemployed or underemployed potential employees, available for expansion of existing businesses or recruitment of new businesses, have been on-going at the federal, state, and local levels. The State of Alabama, through the Workforce Development Division, of Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), coordinates statewide initiatives in workforce development and is the contracting authority, grant recipient, and fiscal agent for any federal program in workforce development which fund local grant sub-recipients. www.adeca.state.al.us The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) administers the Alabama Employment Service and collects, assimilates, analyzes, and distributes data on employment statistics and jobs (Labor Market Information), unemployment statistics, workman's compensation, and unemployment insurance. www.dir.state.al.us

Alabama Cotton Producers, a division of Alabama Farmers Federation , is composed of cotton farmers from across the state involved in the production of the state's largest row crop. Cotton production in the state is deeply imbedded in Alabama's history.
The boll weevil devastated the South's cotton industry around 1910, but with the implementation of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program , cotton made a big comeback in the state and once again is King of row crops in Alabama.
The boll weevil was honored in 1919 when a monument was erected in downtown Enterprise, Alabama as a reminder that the tiny insect pest had forced farmers to diversify their operations.
Today's cotton farmers rely on more than just the eradication program to produce a good crop. Using the latest farming techniques and biotechnology, yields have improved dramatically in the last century.
Alabama farmers planted nearly 560,000 acres of cotton in 2003, and this year could be one of the best overall crops in recent history. Farmers are expected to harvest 510,000 acres with estimated yields of 753 pounds per acre for a total of about 800,000 bales in 2003. Cotton is grown in 59 of Alabama's 67 counties and had cash receipts totaling nearly $190 million in 2001. For more details about cotton statistics in Alabama, visit the Alabama Agricultural Statistics Service website . Top cotton-producing counties in Alabama include Limestone, Madison, Lawrence, Monroe, Colbert, Escambia, Lauderdale, Cherokee, Baldwin and Geneva, while the state ranks ninth in the nation in production.

Alabama Hay and Forage Producers, a division of Alabama Farmers Federation , is composed of farmers across the state involved in the production of Hay and Forage Crops. Hay and forage corps are an important part of Alabama's agricultural economy, and there are a lot of producers interested in research being done to improve varieties and enhance marketing. The Hay and Forage Division works closely with Auburn University and others to take advantage of the work already being done and to target future research into areas which can directly benefit our farmers and ranchers.
Commercial hay production is big business in Alabama, and is likely to get even bigger. As hay machinery costs rise, ownership of hay equipment becomes more difficult to justify unless large quantities of hay are being produced. Yet, the average beef cattle herd in Alabama is less than 30 animals. This makes it increasingly more economical for livestock producers with small herds to purchase the hay they need, and for producers who have hay equipment to focus on meeting the increasing demand for hay.
Hay and forages are produced on 4.2 million acres of land in Alabama. Hay production is valued at over $85 million annually with the value of forages on pasture land valued at nearly $1 billion. For more details about hay statistics in Alabama, visit the

Can I sell food made in my home kitchen?
The short answer is, "probably not." Each state is different, so proper advice is needed from a specialist in each state. Some states allow sales at farmer's markets of select foods; others prohibit sales altogether. The National Center for Home Food Preservation does NOT provide guidelines to home food preservers who wish to take the next step from home food preservation to commercial food preservation. Home food preservation is not regulated; however, food preservation and processing for commercial purposes is regulated. There are federal level regulations from the U.S. FDA (also USDA for meat and poultry products), state level regulations, and often county or city regulations.
