Alabama monument reminiscent of Manhattan controversy Published on Friday, August 29, 2003 Crystal Welborn Kansas State Collegian
Should a sacred Christian document be displayed on government property? This issue is on the nation's radar yet again because of the current situation in Montgomery, Ala. and Manhattan residents might be feeling deja vu. The chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court recently defied a federal court ruling to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building. In 1999 a monument displaying the Ten Commandments was removed from in front of Manhattan City Hall and moved to its new residence at Manhattan Christian College after a lawsuit was brought against the city of Manhattan regarding the stone. The monument, said Jolene Rupe, assistant in Institutional Advancement at Manhattan Christian College, was one of many donated by the Fraternal Order of Eagles to cities throughout the United States. Dick Kurtenbach, executive director of the ACLU in Kansas and Western Missouri, said the Manhattan situation differs from the current Alabama situation because of the way things were handled. "The legal issue is whether or not it is lawful for a state agency to display that monument," he said. "The Alabama state Supreme Court justice put the monument there and is defying federal law but the city of Manhattan removed the monument, which is the appropriate way."

Alabama State University Inaugurates National Center, Assumes Role In Promoting Montgomery As Museum City
Alabama State University recently made a giant splash that is destined to send ripples around the world. On May 9 the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture held a press conference to announce its future role in promoting the city of Montgomery as a historic museum city. Montgomery’s designation as a museum city takes into account the city’s unique place in American history and its juxtaposition of civil rights and Civil War history. Symbols of these two diverse periods are represented by the First White House of the Confederacy and the Civil Rights Memorial. Both are about three city blocks apart on Washington Avenue near the state Capitol. “It is our privilege today to announce publicly the establishment of the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University,” said President William H. Harris in opening the event.

This question generated more than a hundred different categories of response, which we classified into the sixty-five categories shown in Exhibit 1 below. In 1990, ninety percent of the adult population identified with one or another religion group. In 2001, such identification has dropped to eighty-one percent.

Here are links to more than 700 women's studies (including "gender studies") programs, departments, and research centers around the world that have web sites. Programs and departments offering graduate degrees or concentrations have this fact noted in an annotation below the link. For a larger list of women's studies programs, including those without web sites, see the September issue of the Modern Language Association's journal PMLA or Gerri Gribi's listing of Women's Studies programs in the U.S. For information about institutions offering Women's Studies graduate and undergraduate degrees online, see Online Degrees in Women's Studies NOTE: After I had started putting this listing together, Kate Robinson told me about an annotated collection of links she has compiled of Women's Studies programs in the United States . I've decided to leave my links up as well, especially since they include programs outside the US , and since I keep learning about new sites. (My listing now includes more than 700 links; I last updated it on March 22, 2004

Final comments were filed in response to the PSC June 1998 Order soliciting comments on electric utility industry restructuring. As a result, Interim Report No. 1 was issued by the Task Force in September 1999.
