BOYS STATE
ABOUT ALABAMA BOYS STATE
Foreword:
The American Legion believes there is no better way to assure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideals and objectives of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished long-standing objectives of American Legion Boys States. They are accomplished through a unique summertime program, one that emphasizes not classroom lectures or textbook learning, but participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with its governing bodies and elected officials. Boys State was founded, and its courses of instruction designed, to supplement the information taught in high school civic classes. Boys State teaches that our form of government is good, but that its preservation depends on intelligent, informed and loyal citizens in combination with an honest and impartial administration of government activities. Young men chosen to be Boys State participants can look forward to a wonderful and challenging experience. All who attend can acquire a better understanding and regard for two of our nation's greatest benefits: freedom and democracy.

ALABAMA COURSE OF STUDY: GEOGRAPHY "This one-semester study of geography in the Seventh Grade emphasizes the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a geographic perspective. By the end of this course, students should understand the fundamental physical and human patterns on the Earth's surface as well as the processes that created these patterns. Representative areas of the world should be selected for detailed studies of the content standards. In this course students learn how to apply a geographic perspective to the past, present, and future. This Seventh Grade study of geography supports the study of world history in the Eighth and Ninth Grades as well as the study of U.S. history in the Tenth and Eleventh Grades. The six essential elements of geography are used to organize the content standards. Geographic skills and perspectives ( Geography for Life , 1994) are interwoven throughout the content standards." Coastal Alabama is a center for regional tourist, recreational, industrial, and military activities. The Main Pass of Mobile Bay divides the coastal region into two sections: Dauphin Island to the west and the Morgan Peninsula to the east. Each coastal segment contains archeologically, historically, and environmentally sensitive areas. For example, an archeological site from the Mississippian Indian culture (900 - 1700 A.D.) is located on Dauphin Island. Sites with modern historic significance include: Fort Gaines on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan on the western end of the Morgan Peninsula. The sites were pivotal factors during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The State of Alabama, represented by the Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA), continues to work with us to determine the feasibility of using sand from Target Site 4, a large sand resource located in Federal waters, to nourish the eroding Dauphin Island. The second year of the planned 3-year project focuses on modeling the regional geological system incorporating the area offshore Dauphin Island. The impact of Hurricane Danny on the Alabama Coast heightened public support for use of offshore sand to repair the Morgan Peninsula beaches. The Cooperative conducted geological reconnaissance and site assessments of the offshore region in 1998. Starting in 1999, the MMS/Alabama Cooperative began efforts to involve other agencies and groups in the process of developing the Federal sand resources offshore of the Morgan Peninsula, and is continuing detailed assessment of coastal and nearshore sedimentary and erosional regimes.

SUGGESTED GRADE LEVELS: 5 - 12
This program would be appropriate for history, social studies, military classes, and possibly in music classes where students are interested in writing and arranging music soundtracks. It would be especially helpful for units about Alabama's Civil War history. The program runs 26:40. The music soundtrack was recorded entirely by musician/composer Bobby Horton of Birmingham, Alabama. Horton's compositions have been used by filmmaker Ken Burns in two PBS series, THE CIVIL WAR and BASEBALL. His arrangements have also been used in feature length movies, documentaries, and his own 12 volume collection of songs from the Civil War.

OBJECTIVE
PAGES FROM THE CIVIL WAR IN ALABAMA explains how this horrible war affected people in Alabama. Although there were no major battles here, skirmishes and raids within the state's borders took a heavy toll. Alabamians also made many sacrifices to support the Confederacy, and suffered from shortages of food and material. The program concentrates on the Tennessee Valley area south to Selma and does not cover all battles which were fought in Alabama.

OVERVIEW
Although the Confederacy was formed in Montgomery and this city became the South's first capital, Alabamians were not united in their support of the Civil War. Indeed, Alabama stayed on the brink of internal civil war from 1861-1865 because of divided loyalties. Many Northern and Wiregrass (Southeast) Alabama counties remained loyal to the Union, but the rich plantations of the Black Belt ruled the state politically. These Black Belt planters forced the poorer counties to go along with secession. The tension was perhaps greatest in Northern Alabama where there were few plantations and slaveholders.

DIRECTORIES Directories have been published for various Alabama cities and counties since the early 1800s, though they may not be available for every year. Some directories focus on the businesses or occupations of an area, others include heads of households, landowners, and voters. City and county directories are similar to present-day telephone books and are useful records for locating people. They were often published annually. They list heads of households and employed household members with their occupations and addresses. They can be used with census records or as substitutes for them. Directories are particularly valuable for research in large cities where a high percentage of the people were renters, new arrivals, or temporary residents. In fact, a directory may be the only source that lists an ancestor if he or she was not registered to vote and did not own property. Most households were included because the directories were created for salesmen, merchants, and others interested in contacting residents of an area. Directories have other clues that may require careful study to discover. For example, people in similar or related occupations were often relatives, in-laws, or friends. A year-by-year study of directories may reveal the movement of ancestors and relatives within the city and sometimes to or from other cities.

After 10 days, responding patients are unblinded and asked to enroll in the long-term, open-label extension protocol. Published Nov. 16, 1998 (U-WIRE) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. UAB is on its way to becoming one of the first schools in the Southeast to offer a degree in African American studies. The proposal is to create an interdisciplinary major for the study of African American music, literature, art, health and politics. In August 1994, Associate Professor Virginia Whatley Smith and a small committee looked to see if having a African American studies major would be feasible at UAB. When they sent in the proposal recommending a new major, they were told to proceed. Three years later, an expanded nine-member committee worked to refine the proposal. The proposal was first was submitted to the deans of the schools of Arts and Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Both these schools helped to co-found the AFrican American studies program at UAB. The proposal went through a few revisions, then headed to the Undergraduate Programs Council, in June of this year, where it was approved. The proposal then went to the UAB Faculty Senate, which gave the proposed degree its unanimous approval in August.
