Welcome here to visit the ESRI web site.) Our initial data layers were extracted from the First Street program form Wessex. (Click here To classify the roads, we divided them into four divisions, Major Arterials, Major Streets, Parkways, and Collectors. Our method of classification based on these four division are: Major Arterials are Interstate Highways, Major Streets are State and Federal Routes, Parkways are major county roads and city streets which are used to travel from one area to another and not just to visit a location on the given street, and Collectors are all other streets, those that would only be traveled for a specific purpose and to a particular location on the street. The distinction between Parkways and Collectors is somewhat difficult in the adjoining counties, but we are satisfied with our classification of the Etowah County roads. For Etowah County roads only, we also have created a data field for the Functional Classification assigned by Alabama Department of Transportation. To use the route command in ARC/INFO, we created a table of turning movements and delay times, and assigned attributes to every intersection on the street network. We also created a new field in the streets attribute table to calculate time of travel from intersection to intersection based on distance and anticipated speed, with the speed being different for each classification of road in the network. This allows us the flexibility of having the command optimize the route based on either time or distance.

    Weird City Names
The US has many interesting city names. Here's a couple of the better ones that a friend and I found, using the geographic nameserver at the University of Michigan (telnet martini.eecs.umich.edu 3000): (p.s. Thanks to Senator Exon, for making this geography illegal! If you're under 18, turn off the computer and go study, uh, geography or something... :-) An oxymoron: High, Texas, and Low, Utah? * Lots of Joy, but none in California! Alabama has Intercourse, but Utah has a Virgin. Pennsylvania has Fertility, Desire, Intercourse, and Climax... Those wild Quakers! Pig, Kentucky. Louisiana has a Start, but there's no Finish... One Tiny, two Small's, and a Large. Earth, Texas, USA, Earth... Poor Uranus is the only planet in the solar system without a city. I guess it sounds bad when you say "I'm from your anus..." * 4 Rich, and only 1 Poor. * Utopia is almost everywhere. Suburban, New Jersey. * There's an Arm (MS), 2 Hand's (MI, SC), a Heart (AR), and 2 Finger's (NC, TN), but no leg, head or body anywhere. You can find a Climax in 17 states.

If the Census did not prepare a Soundex index for the state or territory you are looking for, you will see the state search page that includes:
    • at the top, a geographic search graphic a search window for county name a search window for city name a search window for places or institutions a search window for enumeration district numbers search tips for each window
The geographic search identifies schedule roll(s) to view based on data you enter about the family's location in 1930. To most quickly identify which roll or rolls to consult, choose the search window for which you have the most specific, detailed geographic information. Please read the information below before proceeding. Enumeration Districts When the Bureau of the Census assigned areas for census takers to visit when collecting information from residents, it divided counties, cities, towns, villages, Indian reservations, and even hospitals and jails into enumeration districts (ED). Heavily populated areas like major cities would have dozens or even hundreds of EDs while rural counties and places would have only a few or one. Each county was assigned a number, and each ED within it was then numbered consecutively. When the census schedule sheets were compiled, they were arranged by state, county, city or township, and thereunder by ED number. They appear in this order on the microfilm. The Bureau of the Census carefully recorded descriptions of each ED.
