Alabama. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Alabama, "The Heart of Dixie"
    Abbreviation:
AL The etymology of the word or name, Alabama, has evoked much discussion. It was the name of an Indian tribe (Alabama, Albama, Alebamon, Alibama, Alibamou, Alibamon, Alabamu, and Allibamou). Alabama possibly means "Here We Rest", but it could also mean "thicket clearers", Alabama being a compound of Alba meaning "a thick or mass vegetation," and amo meaning "to clear, to collect, to gather up." Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. From the early 19th century, Alabama's economy was dominated by cotton. However, although it is still an important crop, such as corn, peanuts, soybeans have taken over much of the former cotton lands. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, a comparatively rapid industrialization set in. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) program of hydroelectric power production, begun in the 1930s, fostered the growth of giant fertilizer, munitions, and aluminum industries. Alabama, known as "Heart of Dixie" occupies a central place in the history of the South. Montgomery, the Alabama capital, served as the first Confederate Capital during the Civil War. Tourists can visit Alabama's historic homes and gardens, reminiscent of the Old South. Also popular are the resorts and beaches on Dauphin Island, the Gulf Shore and Mobile Bay.

Dog River Clearwater Revival (DRCR) is an incorporated non-profit association of property owners, recreational users, commercial interests, and other stakeholders concerned with environmental issues affecting Dog River. It is a grassroots movement whose goal is to protect and restore the river. The association's board meets on the first Tuesday of every month. There are four newsletters and four general membership meetings/activities per year. DRCR has been involved in coordinating citizen input into various issues with potential to affect the River. It participates in public awareness programs such as the Dog River Watershed Guardian Awards, administers a water quality monitoring program, works to educate people about the watershed, and encourages enforcement and compliance with environmental regulations. DRCR is the only grassroots organization that concentrates solely on improving water quality in Mobile's Dog River. Dog River and its tributaries drain most of the City of Mobile as well as function as an important recreational waterway. Sixty percent of the Dog River watershed is located within the City of Mobile and forty percent in Mobile County. Many factors have severely degraded the quality of Dog River and its tributaries, including the destruction of wetlands, channelization of city stormwater drainage, and poor land development practices. Other factors are over-reliance on septic tanks coupled with an overburdened city sewage system and neglect by local businesses and citizens in proper use and disposal of chemicals and trash. Dog River and its tributaries drain most of Mobile, Alabama. Those tributaries range from relatively pristine streams to concrete lined drainage ditches to sluggish, sediment choked, tidal channels . As the city itself spreads out into the upper reaches of the watershed, poorly managed construction and the replacement of natural vegetation with impermeable surfaces contribute to the deterioration of water quality in Dog River. Sediment sewage , and trash are the major issues. This urban watershed empties into Mobile Bay, a National Estuary. Table at bottom of this page shows available Dog River reports.
