Across Alabama's Black Belt on Highway 80
Called the Black Belt because of its rich, dark soil, the area of south Alabama traversed by Highway 80 on its route across the southern U.S. was the staging ground for some of Alabama's most significant moments in history. It was here that DeSoto met Tuscaloosa, cotton plantations flourished, the Confederacy was born, and civil rights were won. Follow Highway 80 through Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee on a journey through Alabama history.
Producer: Max Shores The Amistad Incident
Remembering the revolt on the slave ship AMISTAD more than a century and a half after it took place. The coalition of abolitionists and attorneys that was formed to exonerate the imprisoned Africans led to the founding of the American Missionary Association. In turn, this group established many schools for blacks, including Talladega College. The show will also visit the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans, a manuscript library for the study of ethnic history and culture.

Our claim is true. We honestly have been a Community of Good Living since the late 1800's...and we're proud of it.
We have one of the friendliest towns in Northwest Alabama, go ahead, ask anyone from Marion County and they'll have to agree. We're friendly. Our community has endured throughout the years and we did it despite a force of nature, a famous tornado that hit our town in April 1974, which almost destroyed the entire city. But did people move away? Nope, they stayed, they rebuilt, and they continued supporting and giving to this wonderful little town.
We invite you to get to know us through our new Website. If you're thinking of relocating to Alabama we hope you'll consider our town. Did we mention that we're friendly?

Godfrey College and High School (1880 - 1893): A Story of the School The school was founded in 1880 by Robert Gold Isbell and incorporated in 1884 by Robert G. Isbell, Elijah Blanton, Hugh W. Isbell, W.R. Atkins, and Andrew J. Ingle, Trustees. Robert G. Isbell was president. Godfrey College and High School was built in a town then called Godfrey, later Motes, and named for the father of the founder, Godfrey J. Isbell, who had served in the Confederate Army as Private, Company E, 29 th Regiment of Alabama. The school and town were located at the intersection of the Cheatham Road which connected Moulton and Tuscaloosa and the Houston-Columbus Highway five miles south of the present site of Double Springs, Winston County, Alabama. Neither road now exists. Robert G. Isbell was born in Fayette County, Alabama, August 29, 1851, licensed as a minister at the age of nineteen, and joined the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church South at Tuscaloosa, November 20, 1872. He attended Vanderbilt University, School of Religion, now the Divinity School, in the academic year 1875-1876, the first class of that University. Godfrey College sold stock and financed the college buildings and equipment, and students were charged tuition, although farm produce was often accepted for board in lieu of cash. A thriving little town developed, with post office, hotel, stores and shops, including a newspaper

School of Agriculture offered a boarding school experience for top 5 percent of theirhigh school class; 39 University (MO), University of alabama at Montevallo
http://www.mrs.umn.edu/~dpe/history.htm
The UMM Campus Conceived at the outset as a four-year liberal arts college, UMM was to serve not only the population of west central Minnesota, but also was to provide an educational opportunity for students throughout the state who sought a University of Minnesota undergraduate liberal education in a small college setting. The guiding principles of selective admission, controlled growth, and academic excellence in a residential campus atmosphere have not changed for three and a half decades. In 1994, with 1924 students and 120 teaching faculty, UMM combines the living-learning environment of the small liberal arts college with the advantages of being a college of the University of Minnesota. The UMM baccalaureate program is structured but flexible, requiring students to take responsibility for their own learning. The focus is on developing one's intellectual abilities while expanding the horizons of one's knowledge. The members of the faculty, representing over 25 academic fields, are organized into four divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, and Education. A 16-to- 1 student-faculty ratio and a strong institutional commitment to individual attention bring UMM students into frequent contact with faculty; undergraduates often assist faculty in research and professional activities. The UMM student body is made up of a diverse and talented group of men and women. The campus attracts students from throughout Minnesota and more than 20 other states and foreign countries. Over 50 percent of entering freshmen rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class; over 70 percent in the top 20 percent. The majority of students live in on-campus housing, creating a strong sense of community at UMM.

This item is hand signed by the company’s president and secretary and is over 93 years old.
Eufaula, Oklahoma, the county seat of McIntosh County and former Record Town for Recording District No. 12 in Indian Territory, is located 12 miles south of Interstate 40 at the junction of US Highway 69 and Oklahoma State Highway 9. It is named after one of the historic Creek Indian villages in the Creek Nations old homeland, Alabama. There are only two cities named Eufaula in the United States- Eufaula, Oklahoma and Eufaula, Alabama.
Just one half mile east of Eufaula was the site of North Fork Town, settled by the Creek Indians shortly after their arrival in this area in 1836. The Texas Road and a branch of the California Road crossed at North Fork Town, making it a center of traffic. This important tribal community played host to the treaty made between the Confederates and the Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Nations in 1861. North Fork Town is now covered by Lake Eufaula.

Careers for Ph.D.'s at Private Schools
By GWENDOLYN BRADLEY Peter Wozniak left a tenured professorship at Auburn University at Montgomery to teach history at the Montgomery Academy, a private high school in Alabama. Not long after, two of Mr. Wozniak's colleagues followed in his footsteps. "Had I been an associate professor at a major research university, I probably would not have changed," Mr. Wozniak says. "But when one teaches at a small, regional, community-college type institution, one can be far better off at a high school. The students are capable of a very high level of work." Mr. Wozniak initially contacted the Montgomery Academy looking for part-time work to supplement his university salary. When the school later offered him a full-time position, he accepted. After 10 years at Auburn, he was fed up with what he saw as a declining quality of students and low pay. "Unbelievably, the high school is paying me more than the university was going to pay me for being chairman of the department," Mr. Wozniak says. ALSO SEE: A guide to Web resources on teaching in private schools Secondary-school teaching has long been an obvious alternative for humanities Ph.D.'s and A.B.D.'s who don't land the college teaching jobs they want. But increasingly, people with doctorates are viewing elite private-school teaching as a rewarding career in its own right, rather than a watered-down version of college teaching or an undesirable backup plan.
