Adam Aldridge Marion County, Alabama
I am from Glen Allen, Alabama, a small town in Marion County. Marion County has various agriculture products produced every year. My family owns a trucking company, which transports agriculture products all over the country.
Marion County Agriculture
The agriculture in Marion County ranges from Cattle to row crops. The majority of farmers have cattle and raise row crops. They raise various beef cattle and the county has some Dairy cattle operations. The row crops grown are as follows:
  • Cotton
  • soybeans
  • corn (sweet, yellow, etc.)
  • watermelons
  • hay
Marion County also is the home of one of Auburn University's experiment stations. The experiment station conducts research quite similar to Mississippi State University . The people at the experiment station give the locals information on new technology and information about the crops they grow. Also the experiment station hosts the counties FFA Dairy, Beef Cattle, and Land Judging competitions. Dr. Gary Ward, Winfield Highschool Agriculture Teacher, has taken many teams, in all competitions, and won several first place prizes. I have to mention him because he is the one who gained my interest in Agriculture, and coached me and others on them first place teams.

    Conducting Vital Research
    in the Field of Forestry

    by KATIE SMITH, Associate Editor,
    Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station
Published in the Fall 1998issue of TREASURED Forests In 1883, the Alabama Legislature established the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES), a research system entrusted with the mission of developing better, more efficient ways to produce food, fiber and other products from Alabama's natural resources. Now, some 115 years later, that system continues to provide information valuable to all Alabama citizens, including the state's forest industry and all users of forest resources. "Forestry is the largest single industry in the state," said Brinker. "More than $13.2 billion per year is contributed to the state's economy through the forest products industry. And the basis for that industry is the timber resource that we have in the state." According to Brinker, 68 percent of the state's land area is timberland. There are 214,000 landowners who own 40 acres or more of forestland and 450,000 landowners who own one acre or more. "There's a lot of people who are in forestry to grow timber as a business or to enjoy the wildlife and recreation opportunities or just the aesthetics of forestland. It’s not only a big business, it’s a big part of the state’s environment. It’s a bigger part of most Alabamians' lives than most people realize."

We’re all familiar with the ability of dogs to detect bombs or drugs simply by smell . . . but new research is using the canine “sniffer” to help farmers. Researchers are training dogs to identify a problem common to catfish production. As Kevin Worthington reports, tests show using the dogs can save farmers time and money over detection methods used in the past.

Most Alabama farmers don't even have all their crops planted yet, but some are already concerned that they may lose money this year. The problem is the same that motorists across the state are facing high fuel prices. But as Kevin Worthington reports, farmers use so much fuel that the higher costs could cause them to have a bad year even if they make a good crop.

Alabama Farmers Federation: A proven past, a strong future.
Agriculture has always been central to the life and economy of Alabama. It still is. With almost 400,000 farm and non-farm members, the Alabama Farmers Federation is Alabama's largest and most diversified farm organization. An independent, non-government organizaton, the Alabama Farmers Federation (also known as Alfa Farmers) is based in the capital city of Montgomery. A grassroots organization that is made up of farmers, led by farmers and dedicated to serving farmers, we have active county Farmers Federations in all of Alabama's 67 counties.
Our purpose: to represent agriculture and serve farmers. That was our mission in 1921, and it remains our mission today. The Alabama Farmers Federation is the farmer's lobbyist, his professional society and his public relations representative; his marketing consultant, his information source and his spokesman; and, for him and his family, a social organization, a civic and service club and a support group. Through the years, just as our membership has grown, so has our commitment to representing, promoting and protecting Alabama agriculture.
