A SHORT HISTORY OF
ALABAMA AGRICULTURE, 1820-1945
by Dr. Dwayne Cox, University Archivist
From statehood (1819) until the end of World War II, nothing influenced Alabama's economic, social, and political life more than agriculture. Before the Civil War, climate, soil, and market demand fostered cotton cultivation, which brought with it slavery and a paternalistic social order. After the war, white and black tenant farmers replaced slave labor, the price of cotton dropped, and grass-roots agrarian unrest followed. Government and business interests combined to gain control of agricultural policy during the early twentieth century, which they retained through the end of World War II. By that time, mechanization, rural to urban migration, and crop diversification had altered Alabama agriculture, but farm and forest products remained central to the state's economy and those who had an economic interest in them still had a political voice as strong as any. Extensive white settlement of Alabama followed the War of 1812 and the defeat of the Creek Nation. Most of the settlers came from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, pushed by land exhausted through the over-cultivation of cotton and drawn by the rich soil of the Tennessee Valley and the Black Belt. They brought with them slave labor and the plantation system, which were readily transplanted in Alabama. Steady demand for cotton made this product the nation's leading export during the first half of the nineteenth century and solidified the planter elite's sense of self-importance. On the eve of the Civil War, however, Alabama was only one generation removed from the frontier and most of the state's farmers owned few, if any, slaves.

gricultural income from farming continues to be a very important part of the total income received by Alabama's farmers. The four major sources of farm income are: livestock and poultry ; crops; forest products ; and non-farm commercial timber.
Inset: The Boll Weevil Monument , Enterprise.
Recent data released by the Alabama Agricultural Statistics Service show that Alabama farmers received a record $ 3.69 billion from farm marketing's and related activities in 1996, 9 percent above 1995 total cash receipts. Total farm and forestry receipts, including non-farm commercial timber, reached $4.24 billion in 1996, also a record for the state. The top five commodities for cash receipts were: (1) poultry; cattle and calves; cotton; (4) nursery, sod and greenhouse products; and (5) peanuts
Statewide, livestock and poultry continue to be the major source of farm income.
Inset: Coffee County Extension Agent Richard Petcher gives some Coffee County mules a tasty treat.
This category in 1996 returned $2.3 billion in total cash receipts to Alabama producers. This compares to $2.1 billion in cash receipts in 1995, or an increase of five percent.

Agriculture Funding Approved in 2004 Federal Budget CONGRESSMAN TERRY EVERETT ANNOUNCES HOUSE PASSAGE OF $4.6 MILLION IN ALABAMA AGRICULTURE PROJECTS The U.S. House of Representatives has cleared $4.6 million in new Federal funding for Alabama agriculture research, announced Congressman Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth. "The House has taken action to ensure that six important programs beneficial to Alabama and American agriculture can continue," Everett observed. I was pleased to support the passage of this funding which now must get Senate approval before becoming law. "Here in the Wiregrass, I secured $536,000 to continue the ongoing Tri-State Joint Peanut Research program," Everett said. "This study, which is going into its third year, is devoted to increasing peanut and cotton yields through rotating the crops with Bahia and Bermuda grass which helps improve the soil's production capacity. In addition, the grass rotation can be used for beef cattle production, thereby increasing the income potential from the land. The research is being performed jointly with Auburn University, the University of Georgia, and University of Florida.

"The 2003 federal agriculture programs continue to capitalize on Alabama's high tech resources, climate, and farm expertise." "For starters, Auburn University will receive $1,125,000 for food safety research. For the fifth consecutive year, Auburn's Research Center will obtain funding to continue its efforts to rapidly identify, pinpoint, and characterize through sensor and information technology, problems which may arise in America's food supply. "Elba, Alabama's J.B. Taylor Diagnostic Animal Laboratory is earmarked to receive a $700,000 Alkaline Digester System.
