Historic Masonry - Architectural Symposium on Lime Mortars
Chicago - June, 3-4, 2003
Symposium Agenda
Architects listen to Stafford Holmes during a case study session on Warwick Castle John Machnicki leads a demonstration in the different techniques available to finish a lime mortar joint to create long life cycle performance. Architects and guests load onto a bus for the architectural tour of recent lime mortar installations in the Chicago area. Architects and guests listen as Mario Machnicki hosts the architectural tour of the Historic North shore area of Chicago. The tour includes case study reports of sandstone repairs carried out using hydraulic lime mortar 3 years ago. The tour takes the participants to the Elks National Memorial to view recent lime mortar repairs to the limestone plaza decks. Mario Machnicki discusses the details of the project and the premature failure of the hydraulic lime joints shortly after installation was completed. Are lime mortars truly a better choice as we've been told? In Europe, the use of lime putties and hydraulic limes in mortars for building conservation is widespread and well accepted.

FAA on DNC Convention: No Private Aircraft at Logan
Logan, NYC to limit flights to commercial airline service during convention
The Associated Press is reporting that the FAA has reached a decision on flight traffic into and out of Logan International Airport during the Democratic National Convention. No private or corporate flights will be allowed at Logan during the convention for security reasons. FAA spokesperson Laura Brown said the restrictions will be imposed from 7 AM on July 26 through midnight on July 29. The FAA is issuing the restrictions at the request of the US Secret Service, the agency responsible for security at the event. Flights into and out of Logan during those periods will be limited to commercial scheduled airline traffic that meets security requirements. The same restrictions will apply to a TFR that is expected to be put into place on a radius of 10 miles around Logan. Private and corporate flights, as well as other commercial traffic that does not meet security requirements, will be allowed to operate within a 30 mile radius. However, these aircraft will be required to file a flight plan and land or take off at one of the airports outside the 10 mile radius around Logan. General aviation flights, however, will not be allowed to take off from those airports unless they are going to leave the 30-mile radius, Brown said.

Holding on to History

An Historic Landmark of the Nation's Capital Serving the People Who Make History for More than 60 Years... Almost from the beginning of the English Colonial History of this continent, the crest of the National Airport site has been rich in historic significance. The Gravelly Point site has significance dating back to colonial days. Captain John Alexander built a mansion called "Abingdon" on the site in 1746. A descendent, Philip Alexander, donated most of the land on which the City of Alexandria was built, and it was so named in his honor. The mansion was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, and was the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis, stepdaughter of President George Washington. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized until 1998 when the Airports Authority preserved the site and housed artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A. Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings.

Hancock County
Port and Harbor Commission
Mississippi
Hancock County's long, colorful history dates back to the early French explorers, and today encompasses the exploration of space. Lifestyles reflect a diversity of cultures, and heritage is celebrated in festivals, fairs, food and architecture. While maintaining these generations - old traditions, our residents welcome the progress introduced by new commercial activity. The year of its birth, 1963, was a year of optimism for the Port and Harbor Commission. The huge NASA rocket testing center was under construction, and construction work of all types was at a record high. Hancock County residents had begun to think big. A barge and seaport did not seem to be an impractical dream. After months of meetings and discussions, the Commission employed a nationally known engineering firm, Michael Baker Company, to conduct a study as to where and what kind of seaport and industrial park should be located in Hancock County. After months of study regarding water access, rail proximity, availability of large tracts of land, elevation of property sites, and many other considerations, the engineers' report proposed a location in western Hancock COunty, adjacent to Mulatto Bayou. Though it would require dredging a ship channel from the Pearl River and a barge channel along the northern perimeter of the industrial park, the site's advantages far outweighed any other possible location.

Beginning Sept. 1, Northwest Airlines and its Northwest Airlink affiliate, Mesaba Airlines, increased non-stop service between Lexington and its Detroit hub from five to six daily flights. Northwest Airlines currently offers six daily departures to Detroit and three daily departures to Memphis from Blue Grass Airport. Continental Express, the regional airline subsidiary of Continental Airlines, announced it begins twice-daily nonstop service between Lexington and its Houston hub on Oct. 1. Bowman Field, Louisville
Often overshadowed by the giant Louisville International Airport and its UPS hub, tiny Bowman Field took the spotlight on July 25. Gov. Paul Patton presented a check that day for $150,000 to the Regional Airport Authority of Louisville and Jefferson County in a ceremony re-dedicating the historic Bowman Field Administration Building. The Bowman Field Administration Building is considered a classic example of Works Progress Administration (WPA) architecture and was featured in an exhibit of WPA architecture. Lords of the dance

US architect Peter Pran represents the new wave of international architects who believe that great work can come out of the largest 'corporate' firms, through the use of small design studios. 'The building must be able to dance as a lone dancer and in a chorus line, and not lose its potency,' he enthuses, in his newly-published monograph. The same analogy could be used to describe the role of senior designers in the large firms, of which he has always been one. Pran, the inspirational designer of mega public and private buildings around the world, trained with Mies van der Rohe in the early 1960s, and became the guiding light at US firm Ellerbe Becket before moving to NBBJ in 1996. Where corporate design has traditionally been perceived as conventional and one-dimensional, modern architecture at the end of the century, as demonstrated by Pran, is achieving a complexity and dynamism of new proportions. For these designers, setting up as individuals is off limits for two major reasons. Firstly, there is the practical issue of managing without the infrastructure and financial resources of the corporate base, and the significant public and private commissions that go with that. Secondaly, such architects are determined to deconstruct the hierarchy in one-man firms thus ensuring that they don't die with the founder.
