Air Service Developments On December 3rd, US Airways applied to the U.S. DOT for permission to initiate new service to Dublin and Shannon, Ireland. The roundtrip, seasonal service will begin in May 2003 and will increase the number of non-stop transatlantic destinations out of PHL to ten. This application by US Airways culminates a long and intensive marketing effort by PHL that included strong support from the community. On December 7th, the Director participated in a ribbon-cutting event for US Airways' new non-stop service to St. Kitts. On December 21st, a similar event was held for US Airways' new service to Granada. PHL now provides service to 15 Caribbean destinations, making us the second busiest Caribbean hub in the U.S. USA 3000, our hometown airline, will begin scheduled service to Punta Cana in January. The airline is also finalizing plans for service to Cancun, Mexico.

Life / Social Print this Article What the future holds for Beijing's architecture Last Updated(Beijing Time):2004-05-09 09:42 You are in a city like no other on earth. Beijing is not the New York of China, nor the London of northeast Asia, nor the Mexico City of the Orient. Within a few years it may resemble the set of Blade Runner or Fritz Lang's Metropolis more than any of those places. Consider that by 2008, the following are some of the ambitious projects that will be completed in the capital: More than ten million square metres of construction in the CBD (the area around the China World complex); 148.5 kilometres of new light rail and subway tracks, giving the city a total of 202 kilometres; the Fifth Ring Road, the Sixth Ring Road and the Beijing-Miyun Expressway, giving Beijing 718 kilometres of expressways and thousands of kilometres of motorways; the construction and expansion of 318 kilometres of downtown urban streets. Those figures are compiled from Xinhua reports and statistics released by the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (or BOCOG). Different sets of numbers are reported in newspapers in China and abroad on an almost daily basis, and that is one of the problems when trying to figure out what this city will look like in a few year's time: everything is in a state of flux. There motivations behind the construction of new infrastructure projects and new are different buildings: some of them are designed to alleviate problems that have been building for years, others have been planned especially for the Olympics, but built in the hope that they will contribute to the city's environment long after the athletes and spectators have departed. No matter what the results may be, Beijing in 2008 will be dramatically different from the city we know today. Let's take a closer look:

On a high northeast plateau northeast of Atofagasta, Calama is more of a business center than a tourist destination. Still, it is a popular stopover for visitors headed to the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama and the geysers at El Tatio.
Colonial villages like Chiu Chiu and archaeological monuments like the Pukara de Lasana, a pre-Columbian fortress, are within easy driving distance of Calama. The improved highway to San Pedro has made it possible to visit El Tatio and return via villages like Caspana, Ayquina and Chiu Chiu in one long day. For some, the world's largest open-pit mine in neigboring Chuquicamata is also an attraction. Codelco, the state-run copper mining enterprise, offers tours of its facilities, including the awesome open-pit, every weekday morning.

Background From Frank Lloyd Wright's early prairie houses to Philip Johnson's self-revealing mid-century glass house to Frank Gehry's never ending musing on individuality in his Santa Monica home, the single family residence served as the test bed for architectural principles, theories, and ideas in the 20 th century. Through the most influential houses of the last one hundred years, the ideological course of architecture can be understood. Built or unbuilt, these projects have not only defined the architectural moment but, often, launched the careers of such notable architects as Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Graves, Eisenman, Meier, Gehry, and Mayne to name a few. Currently, the architectural world finds itself at a time when the emphasis on investigations of formthat for the past quarter century had dominated architectural thoughtis being replaced by an ethos founded on sustainable design or green architecture. On the surface, the green emphasis on industrial processes, the origin of materials, and the daily habits of the occupant echo the manifestos of the 20 th century avant-garde. However, where the paradigm of the machine was a vehicle to the aesthetic of manmade living a century ago, the new paradigm of the machine is a means to the aesthetic of living efficiently and sustainably today. Or, paraphrasing Le Corbusier, “the house is a machine for green living.”

Madison County lies on the western side of the Greater Columbus area. It is primarily a rural, farming area: 90 percent of the county's land area is in farms, and it ranks fourth among Ohio's counties in production of both corn and soybeans. However, manufacturing is also an important part of the local economy; it ranks as the largest of all industry sectors in terms of employment, accounting for nearly a third of all covered positions. Among these firms are a number of suppliers for the Honda Assembly Plant in nearby Union County. London is Madison County's seat and largest city, with a population of 8,771. It is a small, friendly town with tree-lined streets and quiet neighborhoods. The quaint Downtown has excellent examples of early American architecture with the historic Courthouse, numerous small shops and restaurants, and the state's second oldest stagecoach inn which currently operates as a restaurant.

UPDATED AT 8:15 PM EDT Friday, Nov 14, 2003
Advertisement a3=true;aW=300;aH=250;sBoxAd=true; This autumn marked my 14th year away from Toronto, but I continue to have strong opinions regarding its status in the world. I don't read the Canadian press with daily frequency. For the past few weeks, however, I've lost whole chunks of my morning digesting coverage of Toronto's mayoral race, and am astounded that the city has supported a candidate with a staunchly anti-air-transport stance. Last year I flew into Toronto four times, twice direct from Europe and twice via New York. I found myself wishing that Toronto's various authorities had had the good sense a decade ago to follow London's lead and transform Toronto's island airport into something that resembled London's City Airport. For the uninitiated, City Airport is a single-runway operation to the east of London's financial district; it has positioned itself as Europe's most convenient, user-friendly airport. As a regular user of City and other centrally located airports in Europe, I've had no shortage of shock and amusement in watching how the Toronto island airport is being positioned as the biggest threat to the city's health and welfare. Amusement, because Toronto has a few more pressing issues to concern itself with, outside its most strategically positioned transport hub after Union Station. Shock, because both the press and public have allowed themselves to be fed a somewhat hysterical story about how the airport's expansion will play havoc with waterfront development and the environment.

TEXAS BUSINESS REVIEW Bureau of Business Research • College and Graduate School of Business • The University of Texas at Austin June 1999 The Regional Economic Impact of New Airport Construction: The Case of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Elsie L. Echeverri-Carroll, Ph.D. Head, Economic Development Program Bureau of Business Research University of Texas at Austin In the late 1980s it became apparent that Austin’s Robert Mueller Municipal Airport would not be equal to the demands generated by the growth of the city surrounding it. The dynamic increases in cargo and passengers increasingly taxed the capacity of the aging Mueller facility. Consequently, in September 1993, more than sixty years after Mueller opened, Austin voters approved $400 million in revenue bonds to build a new airport at the site of Bergstrom Air Force Base.
The 1991 decision by Congress to close the base had created an opportunity to build a new airport to meet the needs of a booming Austin. The $585 million Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), the largest construction project in the city’s history, opened for cargo operations in 1997 and began passenger operations in 1999. ABIA provides a strong example of the immediate economic benefits and pressing policy issues that accompany large infrastructure projects, such as the building of a new airport. Economic Benefits
Several kinds of measurable economic benefits accrue with a new airport. First, the construction of such a large project significantly increases the volume of employment—direct and indirect—in an area. The ABIA construction program included everything from demolition and utilities installation to terminal construction and high-tech information systems installation. Direct employment was created at engineering, architecture, CAD, and surveyor companies. As important, some of the growth in employment resulted from the emergence of new small companies, such as DAVCAR Engineers. These companies, in turn, buy goods and services from other local companies, which must then increase their employment to meet the expanded demand for their goods. City of Austin estimates show that 11,299 new jobs were generated in the construction of the airport in 1998. Approximately 50 percent of these jobs represent direct employment.

However, it only has a population of about 55,000 residents. Christopher Columbus is said to have discovered the island in 1493, landing at Salt River on the north coast. The eastern part of the island is more arid, while the western half is lush with beautiful green hills, rainforests, and wonderful white sandy beaches.
