Search Contact FAQ Sitemap You are here: Home Airport - the enterprise Architecture and buildings Terminal 2 ... Events General information The new terminal Development: Within just a few years of going into operation, Munich Airport claimed its place among Europe's major air transport hubs and has been ranked 9th among Europe's top ten airports since 1998. In 1999 21.3 million passengers were counted. The latest projections call for this number to swell to 40 million by 2010. This enormous growth in passenger traffic has caused Munich Airport to reach its capacity limits much sooner than expected. The existing terminal has already been repeatedly expanded. To ensure that sufficient capacities are available to meet expected growth in passenger traffic, Munich Airport will need a second terminal in 2003 along with the airside and landside infrastructure to serve it. Location: Terminal 2 is being built to the east of the existing passenger area. The terminal's defining pier is aligned in a north-south direction. The design permits satellite facilities to be built, if necessary, that will be functionally dependent on Terminal 2. The two-level design will place arrivals and departures above one another on the land side, while the airside of the terminal will separate "Schengen" and "non-Schengen" flights - i.e. flights with and without passport checks. Terminal 2 will be linked to the Munich Airport Center (MAC), with the direct pedestrian route to the S-Bahn rail station leading through the MAC's roofed-in forum.

NAS Architecture Highlights
NAS modernization involves providing new systems to enhance capabilities and services for users:
  • Clear, less congested air/ground communications using digital technology
Accurate navigation and landing services to more airports using satellite technology
Expanded surveillance coverage of airspace and airport surfaces
Increased air-to-air situation awareness for pilots
More efficient sequencing of arriving and departing aircraft through improved air traffic control decision support tools
Accurate and timely weather data to controllers and pilots
Sharing of real-time information between users and providers
Increased ability of users to fly more direct routes.
Modernization also includes making the critical infrastructure of air traffic control services easier and more cost-effective to operate and maintain. Critical infrastructure includes:
  • Communications, navigation/landing, and radar surveillance systems
    Weather detection and reporting equipment
Air traffic control computers and displays for controllers Power generation and backup systems Air traffic control facilities sustainment.

Team Collaborates Online to Manage Airport Renovation

The general contractor and subcontractors communicate in real-time over the Web using an Internet-based application service provider.
Airplanes sail above Kansas City International Airport (KCI), where construction crews are managing a $250 million, three-year renovation project. Inside one of the gray jobsite trailers, Lee Turner checks on his requests for information (RFIs) through an application service provider (ASP). With a laptop and T1 connection, he can answer subcontractors' questions online, track changes, and file correspondence electronically. Turner, a project manager for Walton Construction Co., Inc., a Kansas City, Mo.-based general contractor, says his company required all 35 subcontractors to purchase a $400 license for Constructware, an Internet-based ASP, as part of their scope of work. ASPs manage and distribute software-based services and solutions over the Internet or a private network. The construction team has used the ASP to improve communications, streamline the RFI process, and track changes ranging from asbestos removal to installing blast-proof glass after September 11. The attack caused dramatic changes in the design and scope of the project, which began just one month earlier. By using an ASP, the construction team could better handle these changes, and improve the turnaround time of the RFIs.

by Robert Horonjeff Airport Builders by Marcus Binney Airport Systems: Planning, Design, and Management by Richard L. de Neufville Customer Reviews: Almost a step-by-step manual on airport design Modern Terminal is the most complete manual-like book I've read so far. It gives valuable information from the first to the last page and they are not restricted to technical issues like areas, flows and other stuff. The author also makes comments on economic and psychologic aspects of an airport's design process. Trends are also analyzed. Lots of airports are reviewed. Dozens of pictures and plans help visualizing what's in the text. The only drawback is that there could be an annex with useful dimensions like aircraft size, loading bridge size and etc. The book covers the entire process since masterplanning until administration. Really helpful and up-to-date. Excellent.

Palladian Architecture
A Palladian door Palladianism is, loosely, a philosophy of design based on the writings and work of Andreas Palladio, an Italian architect of the 16th century who tried to recreate the style and proportions of the buildings of ancient Rome. Palladio himself was heavily influenced by the writings of the Roman architect, Vitruvius. He also made several erroeous assumptions about Roman domestic architecture based on partial remains of classical temples, but his ideas and philosophy were widely immitated throughout Europe, and particularly in 18th century England. The first popularizer of Palladian style was Inigo Jones , Surveyor-General under James I. Jones was responsible for several very early classical buildings, notably Queen's House, Greenwich, and the Banqueting House at Whitehall. In many ways Jones was ahead of his time, for it was not until well into the 18th century that adherence to the classical ideals of Palladio became truly widespread in England.

Tampere - host city Tampere, Finland's biggest inland city, is beautifully situated on an isthmus between two lakes in southern Finland. With its nearly 200 000 inhabitants Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland. Today Tampere is a dynamic centre of industry: culture, research and education. There are two vivacious and internationally active universities, a university hospital and numerous research centres and institutes of higher education, making it an important centre for research and high-tech industry.
Tampere is located 180 kms (110 miles) north of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Tampere has plenty to offer in terms of recreation and social events. It is large enough to provide all the services a major congress may require, yet small enough to make the delegates and their families feel at home during their stay. More information about Tampere and social activities are available at www.tampere.fi

Also, try the airlines website for their construction stanards. I would guess, though, that the service to be provided is the prime criteria, which is then resolved by the designers into whatever motif or configuration that they choose as the overall aesthetics for the building. Standards will help you plan general spaces for adequate room, interrelationships, etc. but the final interplay of spaces and the design must come from you.

National General Aviation Roadmap Definition for a A Small Aircraft Transportation System Concept Abstract This paper presents trends and forces that shape 21 st century demand for higher-speed personal air transportation and outlines guidance developed by NASA in partnership with other federal and state government and industry partners, for Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) investment and partnership planning. Early 21 st Century Transportation Issues and Opportunities.- Several converging forces are fundamentally re-shaping transportation demand characteristics as we move into the first decade of the 21 st century, including the following:
  • The maturing of the hub-spoke infrastructure into the maturity phase of its natural growth cycle; A "third wave" migration of Americans and their jobs from the suburbs to more rural locations; The transformation of industry from standardized to customized products and services (including transportation) during the shift from the industrial to the information age; The soaring value of human time (and therefore the premium of doorstep-to-destination speed) during the information age;

Access by bus (175, 188) or by taxi (phone: 919) in the direction of the Fryderyk Chopin Airport. CITY OF WARSAW Warsaw is one of the youngest capitals in Europe. It became the Polish capital after Cracow in 16th century. Early settlements however already existed in the 10th century. In 1655 Warsaw's development as the country's capital was halted upon the Swedish invasion known as the "deluge". Warsaw experienced its "golden age" in the 18th century under the last Poland's king Stanislaw August Poniatowski. During that time it was transformed into a modern city. During Poland's partitions by 3 countries, from late 18th century until the World War I Warsaw never gained independence. After World War I Warsaw was re-established as the capital of Poland. Until the World War II Varsovians worked hard to build new infrastructure and expand the city, and by 1939 the population of Warsaw had risen to over 1.3 million.
