University of Lund
The conference aims to present the characteristics of modern airport architecture and its suitability as applied to Nordic airports early in the 21st century. Does a separate style of Nordic airport architecture exist? The conference deals mainly with airport architecture in the ten-year period 1995-2005. In conjunction with the conference, an exhibition of modern Nordic airport architecture will be arranged at the Museum of Sketches for Public Art in Lund.
BACKGROUND
Air travel grew strongly in the late 1990s. Becoming inadequate, old airports and their buildings became bottlenecks in the air-traffic flow. A comprehensive extension of airports is going on. New runways, terminal buildings are coming into existence. The centres of architectural and investment gravity have hitherto lain in extending the main national airports. Many of the smaller airports have also required extension, partly because air-traffic patterns have changed. In parallel to these Nordic developments, the capacities of airports in all parts of Europe have become correspondingly larger.
Airports comprise the intersections of a global communications network and are the framework for one of the most dynamic activities in modern society. At the end of the 1990s, optimism about air travel was remarkable. The large and growing numbers of people that this transportation apparatus deals with require that airports must be extended and are today often the largest construction projects in their countries. The complexity of their activities, new requirements for security and frontier controls, a strong technical development within this industry, demands on the physical structures of buildings for adaptability and flexibility, and altered conditions for operating economics; together put great demands on the work of forming airport terminals. An important architectural basis for the conference is the renewal of the five Nordic capital airports.

    Airport Terminal Lighting
    The Challenge of Efficient Ambience
    by Jim Oliver
The business of managing airport terminal buildings has undergone dramatic change during the 1990s. Tight budgets and rapidly evolving passenger needs have caused airport facility managers to batten down the hatches to reduce costs while expanding airport retail offerings. Not only do airports exist to provide links to other geographic destinations, but they are now expected to become mini-destinations in themselves. The challenge to the industry is no small one. Lighting is one infrastructure item under close scrutiny by airports. New, energy-conserving lighting products and sophisticated design techniques are delivering savings on the energy budget beyond expectations-all the while providing the "atmosphere" needed to give a terminal building the desired arrival-and-departure appeal. This was the goal of Larry French and Len Auerbach of Auerbach + Glasow of San Francisco when they designed the lighting for the new terminal building at the Vancouver International Airport. "Our intention was to support the architectural space by creating an arrival area with a sense of grandeur, a view of the mountains, flying suspended bridges, logjams and native carvings," says French. "We hoped to make the airport a place to remember." "What we've lost in modern airports is that wonderful sense of arrival and departure we used to have in the days of the great train stations. All world-class cities have had outstanding train stations as the dominant entry point into the city. In many airports, the excitement of arrival is missing, and the city misses a good opportunity to make a good first impression."
