That same year, Les joined Columbia University's Underwater Sound Laboratory, where he participated in research associated with the war effort. It was there that he published, in 1945, his first, and perhaps most influential, paper on the behavior of waves in the presence of a disordered array of scatterers. Originally developed to treat the multiple scattering of sound from the cloud of cavitation bubbles in the wake of a submarine, this theory was found to have a wide application in areas as diverse as neutron scattering and the behavior of electrons in disordered alloys. Les's fundamental insights were subsequently rediscovered many times by later workers who were unaware of his paper. His time at Columbia was eventful, and is especially poignant now in light of the World Trade Center airplane disasters on 11 September 2001. Working one Saturday on the 64th floor of the Empire State Building, he was startled to hear the sound of a rapidly approaching airplane. A tremendous noise signaled that it had crashed into the building a few floors above him, resulting in some loss of life. Considerate, but also sparing with his words, Les sent a telegram to his wife, Roma, in Florida with this simple message: "Don't worry. I'm all right!" She was unaware of the accident and, on receiving his telegram, worried!

First in Flight: Countdown to Takeoff
The 10 deadliest airplane crashes
Fatalities have been a part of aviation since its earliest days. In fact, the first person to die in an aviation accident was a passenger flying with Orville Wright. Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge died Sept. 17, 1908, at Fort Meyer, Va., as Orville demonstrated the Wright's airplane for the U.S. Army. Orville was severely injured in the accident. Since that day, countless people have died in aviation accidents. Here's a recount of the 10 deadliest. 1. 583 dead. March 27, 1977, Tenerife, Canary Islands. A KLM 747-200 collides with a Pan Am 747-100 on the runway during heavy fog. Both planes erupt into flames. Sixty-six aboard the Pan Am plane survive. 2. 520 dead. Aug. 12, 1985, Mt. Osutaka, Japan. A Japan Air Lines 747SR suffers an aft bulkhead failure which causes severe control difficulties. The plane crashes into a mountain. Four people survive. 3. 349 dead. Nov. 12, 1996, near New Delhi, India.

Environment and Nature Environment and Nature Disasters and incidents printable version ... About RIVM Disasters and incidents General Overview Environmental disasters and incidents such as (serious) accidents to do with chemical and nuclear installations can break up society. It is therefore the task of the government to exert control when it comes to risks of accidents due to hazardous substances. This task is carried out by the Dutch government through the establishment of an accident prevention policy supervision and enforcement , and control and evaluation of disasters.
  • Accident prevention policy is aimed at the avoidance of disaster wherever possible and limiting the consequences arising from a disaster, should it occur. Supervision and enforcement entail checking to see if the proper permits have been obtained and inspecting sites to see if general safety precautions have been taken. Disaster control means making every possible effort to bring a particular disaster under control and taking proper measures to minimalise the consequences of the disaster. The purpose of the evaluation is to find out what caused the disaster, and to determine if the government authorities were adequate in handling the disaster.

“Airplane crashes, bus bombings, train accidents, and other transportation-related disasters
can cause extensive damage to people and property. Despite the best preventative
measures, transportation officials and emergency personnel need to know how to react if
and
when these types of events occur. “Transportation Disaster Response Handbook presents information and strategies for dealing with all types of disasters and looks at the unique aspects of transportation-related incidents. It outlines how to prepare for emergencies, what to expect during a disaster, how individuals within the emergency agencies should respond, and how these agencies can quickly mobilize to minimize damage and provide assistance to victims.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS
The American Academy of Pediatrics was founded in June 1930 by 35 pediatricians who met in Detroit in response to the need for an independent pediatric forum. At that time, the idea that children have special developmental and health care needs was a new one. Preventive health practices now associated with child care C such as immunization and regular health examinations C were only just beginning to change the custom of treating children as "miniature adults." Today, the Academy unites 47,000 pediatricians throughout the Americas to ensure for all young people the attainment of their full potential for physical, emotional, and social health. To this end, the Academy dedicates its resources to professional education, advocacy for children, representation of pediatricians, public education, access to health care, and service to children.

On September 11, 2001, the attack on America shocked Americans as few of us have ever experienced. We did not know how to cope with it; even though we were not at the World Trade Center in NY, in Pennsylvania, or at the Pentagon. Below you will find pictures that will say more than I could ever express in words. You will also see a letter written by three individuals that will give you food for thought. Last, but not least, the page will end with a prayer and a chance for YOU to forward this page to your friends and families. God's blessings be with you now and forever; keeping you safe and healthy,

The World Trade Center in NY. Look closely at the large picture, than at the insert and you shall find who is behind the terrorism that shook our Country to its knees. These pictures were sent to me by a friend. They will forever be embedded in my brain. He also sent me a letter which I feel I must post here. Please read it, plus the two below. Your feed back is always welcome.

As is readily apparent from the above discussion, experienced counsel is required in order to navigate the treacherous airways surrounding litigation of an aviation disaster. Despite insurance company representations to the contrary, aviation lawyers are generally able to obtain two to five times more compensation for their clients than that offered by the insurance companies. The economic and emotional losses following an aviation disaster are staggering. We at the SCARLETT LAW GROUP, together with our related counsel, routinely retain a number of qualified experts including metallurgists, pilots, electrical engineers, hydraulic experts, aerodynamic engineers, accident reconstructionists, vocational rehabilitation specialists, economists, business evaluation experts, and others, in order to prove liability and damages. There simply can be no shortcuts in the search for truth. Lesser steps result in exponentially lowered offers of settlement. When you or a loved one are involved in an aviation disaster, we at the SCARLETT LAW GROUP stand ready to assist you, when you need it most.
