23. Flying Through The Void NPR Commentary
In addition to all of this, airplane disasters rupture the illusionof control and rationality most of us need to live. We know

NPR Commentary July 22, 1996

Flying Through the Void
A bout two hundred and thirty people died in traffic accidents in the U.S. this past weekend. Two hundred and thirty will die between now and this afternoon from disorders related to smoking. We know these things but barely notice them, unless we're familiar with the victims; yet most of us are genuinely shaken when 230 people we've never met die in an airplane disaster. Much of the reason, of course, is the physical horror of what has occurred. Most of the time in airplanes we grumble about the cramped seats and jaded attendants and plasticized food. It is somehow indecent to think that people who, seconds earlier, found such imperfections worth fretting about were, seconds later, confronting elemental forces of explosion and fire and acceleration through thousands of feet of empty air, ending, sometimes, hundreds of fathoms into the sea. There has always been exceptional power and fascination in the story of groups struck by unforeseen tragedy the theme that connects the destruction of Pompeii by Mount Vesuvius, to the sinking of the Titanic, to the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey . I still remember hearing as a child, more than thirty years ago, about a plane crash that killed an entire college football team. More than thirty years from now I suspect that many people will remember hearing about the high school French club from Pennsylvania.

Ten Healthy Travel Tips for Students

By Eliot C. Heher, MD
For many students, travel is the best part of college or graduate school. Whether you're an American student heading for the London School of Economics, or a Chinese student bound for the University of Southern California, living in a different country can have a profound impact on your outlook and your plans. Here are ten tips to make your excursions safe. 1.Know how to find a doctor and a good hospital in your destination. Find out the names of hospitals that provide quality care. Learn the emergency numbers for your destinationdial 15 (112 from a cell phone) for an ambulance in Paris, 911 in New York, etc. and know that in some places you should not rely on these emergency numbers. Similarly, in some countries, you're better off taking a taxi to a hospital rather than waiting for an ambulance. HTH Worldwide offers students and travelers access to a community of pre-selected doctors outside the U.S., and to the Beech Street Provider Network within the U.S. HTH's CityHealth Profiles can help you learn what you need to know about hospitals and emergency numbers around the world.

Just two months after the four airplane disasters of September 11, 2001, an AirbusA300 taking off from New York s JFK International Airport for Santo Domingo
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/aircrash/safer.html
Making Air Travel Safer
Crash of Flight 111 homepage
As political scientists Roger Cobb and David Primo note in their book The Plane Truth, fewer than 14,000 people perished in U.S. airline accidents between the start of public aviation and the year 2000. (Almost three times that number die in U.S. car crashes each year Lexi Krock
This Boeing 707 on service from Bogota, Colombia, crashed while approaching its destination at New York's JFK International Airport. Seventy-three of the 158 people aboard were killed. The accident occurred after the plane flew in a holding pattern for 77 minutes while awaiting landing clearance at JFK and ran out of fuel. The NTSB attributed the crash to the failure of the flight crew to manage the aircraft's fuel load and to communicate to ground controllers what had become an urgent fuel situation. The board also criticized the airline for failing to provide the crew with the latest wind shear information in New York, which could have helped the pilot anticipate landing delays there and plan for an alternative destination. The FAA subsequently mandated stricter flight planning and communication requirements for all foreign carriers operating in the U.S.
It took one of the longest air crash investigations in U.S. history to determine what happened (if not why) to cause this accident near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which killed all 132 people aboard. En route from Chicago, the Boeing 737 went down in a wooded area 10 miles north of its destination at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport just seconds after the captain declared an emergency. In its final report released five years after the crash, the NTSB concluded that the aircraft's rudder, a moveable control surface hinged to the tail fin, became jammed for still unknown reasons, forcing the plane into an almost vertical roll at about 3,600 feet. NTSB recommendations prompted Boeing to completely redesign the 737's rudder control system and revise the aircraft's flight manual to include a procedural checklist for pilots faced with rudder-control problems.

Derail these subsidies http://www.jewishworldreview.com "I ASSUME I'm talking to a big fan of rail," says Michael Dukakis with a laugh. "Right?" To tell the truth, I have no strong feelings about train travel one way or another. But Dukakis, the former Massachusetts governor and now Amtrak's acting chairman, knows I am no friend of transportation welfare or government bailouts for failing enterprises. That predisposes me against Amtrak's request for $1.8 billion in post-Sept. 11 "disaster" aid and billions more for long-term capital improvements. But I wanted to give Dukakis a chance to change my mind. His argument in a nutshell is that passenger trains are important to the nation's transportation network, and that if Amtrak can count on a steady influx of federal funds around $1.5 billion a year, he suggests it will be able to improve its service and carry a larger proportion of the nation's travelers. That is roughly the argument that Amtrak has been making since it was created 30 years ago, and so far it has been good for more than $25 billion in government subsidies (including a whopping $3.9 billion in the last three years alone). Yet its service remains poor, its finances are a mess, and its share of the travel market has vanished to almost nothing. Amtrak carries just three-10ths of 1 percent of intercity passengers in the United States and loses an average of $25 on every ticket it sells. By any standard, it is a proven failure.
