Apollo's Warriors: US Air Force Special Operations during the Cold War
By Michael E. Haas Colonel (ret), US Air Force Special Operations, 1994 A Korea WebWeekly book review - Lee Wha Rang This is an encyclopedia of the covert actions conducted by the United States armed forces (particularly air commandos) during the Cold War era. The author, a special forces veteran, had access to many secret documents and veterans of covert actions. The book touches on US Air Force contributions to the Office of Special Operations (OSS) activities in Europe and Asia during World War II. Special operations in Korea, Tibet, Libya, Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran and other regions. Photo: A female agent applies the "final touch" before being dropped in North Korea to an uncertain fate. Few agents survived. Col. Haas devotes about 100 of his 370 fact-filled pages to Korea (1945 - 1953). He reveals that Rhee Syngman's Austrian wife personally picked candidates for female agents to be dropped behinds the enemy lines for espionage. These women would walk back home crossing battlefields. Pretty young women, sub-teen boys ("Blue Boys"), mothers with a baby and old men were more likely to have safe passage than military-age men, and so these folks made up the majority of the 'line-crossers'. . Col. Haas clarifies the confusing (intentionally in some cases and unintentionally in most cases) command structures of competing intelligence and guerrilla operations in Korea. It seems that every branch of the military, every unit's G2, every nation participating in the War had some sort of 'spy' ops in Korea.

Soldiers Work to Purify Water for Iraqi Villagers
The 4,500 residents of Teabon and Qutnyah villages in Iraq have never had their own potable water source. Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, stepped in a few months ago to fix that problem. During Saddam Hussein's reign the villagers were neglected by the government and denied clean water. Once the Coalition ousted Hussein's notorious Ba'ath Party, village leaders sought help. Until now, the villagers have been hauling buckets of cooking, bathing and drinking water from the Euphrates River and irrigation canals. Both sources are very polluted, causing illness and birth defects. The Soldiers are working to change the situation through construction of new water purification and distribution sites.

90. Aquila - Polish Air Force In Lincolnshire
An introduction to the Polish air force units based in Great Britain during World War II.
http://www.btinternet.com/~aquila/lincs/polishaf/paf.htm
Polish Air Force in Lincolnshire za nasza i wasza wolnosc
The Polish Air Force (Polskie Sily Powietrzne) was founded at the end of the Great War and in the 1920s/1930s was supported by a substantial aviation industry. It was the first air force in the world to equip its front-line fighter force entirely with all-metal monoplanes, and many international aviation records were established. Originally part of the Army - Lotnictwo Wojskowe (Military Aviation) - it became an independent part of the Polish Armed Forces in 1940. Following the invasion of Poland by Germany and the Soviet Union in September 1939 the Polish government and forces evacuated to Romania, and on into France where they reformed. After the fall of France the Polish government was established in London and Polish armed forces came under the overall allied command. During the Battle of Britain in 1940 1 in 8 of allied pilots was Polish, and the highest scoring allied fighter pilot flew with 303 Squadron of the Polish Air Force. It is said that the Battle of Britain was won by a narrow margin, and the contribution of the already combat experienced Polish pilots was decisive.

A Canadian air force test pilot describes this unique profession.
    http://www.testpilots.com
Howdy! Welcome to "Test Pilot Stuff". I'm Eric Volstad, a test pilot with the Canadian Air Force. Whether you're young or old, I hope you enjoy the information I've collected for you here. When I told my mother that I was going to be a test pilot, she wasn't quite as excited as I was. Perhaps one reason was that, like many people, she had only a vague notion of what test piloting was all about. So for Mom, and for anyone with a passing interest in the subject, here's an introduction to this unusual profession. Experimental test pilots fly new and modified airplanes; occasionally fool around with nerdy calculus equations; and generally spend entirely too much time writing long, technical reports. Their job is to determine if the planes they test can safely do what they were designed to do, before the rest of the flying world takes them into the air. Western air forces select from their ranks experienced pilots who appear to have a certain tolerance of such things, and send them for a year of specialized training at any of the half-dozen test pilot schools in the US and Europe. They usually have a degree or two in engineering, and an operational background flying helicopters, fighters, or large multi-engine aircraft. Military test pilots might hang out at centres dedicated to flight testing, such as the
