Feeding hope: nutrition plays key role in HIV/AIDS care
FAO/WHO publish new manual for people living with HIV/AIDS
A good diet is one of the simplest means of helping people live with HIV/AIDS and may even help delay the progression of the deadly virus, two UN agencies said today. A new manual published jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the relationship between infection and nutrition and offers simple dietary suggestions for the estimated 42 million people living with HIV/AIDS. (It offers practical solutions for people trying to balance their diets in settings around the world) By bolstering the immune system and boosting energy levels, balanced nutrition can help the body fight back against the ravages of the disease and by maintaining body weight it can support drug treatments and prevent malnutrition. “The relationship between HIV/AIDS and malnutrition is a particularly extreme example of the vicious cycle of immune dysfunction, infectious disease and malnutrition,” said Dr David Nabarro, WHO Executive Director for Sustainable Development and Healthy Environments.

Diet Wise, Pound Foolish: Promoted Diets for HIV
By Anya Romanowski, M.S., R.D., C.D.N. and Lisa Zullig, M.S., R.D. Research on drug therapies is traditionally given a higher priority than research into nutrition due to profit potentials. Put simply, protease inhibitors generate significantly more profits than bananas. Since there are so many variations among individuals living with HIV, studies looking at micronutrients have produced inconsistent results. Unlike studies examining the role of vitamins and minerals in HIV, little research is available on specific diets appropriate for this population. With concern about immunity and the potential of certain foods to provide energy and strength, diets advertising these sought-after results have gained popularity in mainstream media. Individuals can be bombarded with alarming advice. Here are two extreme examples: In 1995, Michael Kent Bilbrey was arrested in Chandler, Arizona for selling a quack potion as a cure of AIDS. He was charged with theft and ordered to pay a restitution of $39,300 after his "potion" was found to have no scientific justification since it consisted of nothing more than cranberry juice, saline solution and household bleach.

Patients with HIV may experience fatigue for a number of reasons. Active HIV infection, treatments of HIV, depression, poor nutrition and low hormone levels could be contributing factors. Mental stress and new challenges in your daily life can lead to fatigue. But if you are always tired, it could be due to anemia. There are many reasons why anemia is so common in HIV-infected people. HIV itself can cause a deficiency in erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. Anemia can also be the result of a nutritional deficiency, especially a lack of folic acid, iron, or vitamin B in your diet. Patients with HIV are sometimes unable to obtain sufficient quantities of these vitamins from their diet. Also, many drugs used to treat people with HIV can reduce the number of red blood cells in the body. For example, AZT is a major cause of anemia in people receiving this drug. Severe anemia can be life threatening. But even mild-to-moderate anemia can rob a person of energy and make it hard to live a normal life. How Common is Anemia?

http://www.albany.edu/sph/AIDS/treatment_1.html
1. Why is it important for people with HIV to get medical care? New treatments that fight HIV have been shown to improve health and to help people with AIDS live longer, so receiving care from a doctor who is knowledgeable about HIV is important. Treatments are also available to prevent some illnesses, such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) . And, there is a new blood test called a "viral load test" that measures the amount of virus in the blood. This test gives people with HIV and their doctors better information on when to start treatment, which may be before any symptoms appear. The viral load test can also tell how well treatment is working. People with HIV should seek early medical care from a doctor knowledgeable about HIV, to find out about drugs that fight HIV and to receive care for other HIV related conditions. Another reason to seek medical care is to have tests done for other infections, such as tuberculosis (TB) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to receive treatment as needed. These infections can hasten the progression from HIV infection to AIDS. It is especially important for pregnant women with HIV to get medical care, since they can take medication that will significantly reduce the risk of their babies being born with HIV. The progression of HIV infection in young children is frequently different from that in adults; some children become sick more quickly. It is important that children with HIV infection receive medical care as early as possible.

Aids has killed 11m people in Africa
By Toby Murcott of BBC Science Leading doctors and scientists from all over the world have signed a declaration reasserting their conviction that the HIV virus is the cause of Aids. In a document to be published in the scientific journal, Nature, 5,000 doctors from 50 countries say the evidence is clear-cut and unambiguous.
We've basically had enough and we want to go on the record and say look HIV is the cause of Aids and don't think it's anything other Professor Simon Wain-Hobson They refute what they call revisionist theories linking Aids to poor diet and drug addiction. The statement is being seen as an attempt to halt a growing controversy over the disease sparked by the South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

Many pets not old but stricken with diet-induced AIDS
Modern processed diets are known to be responsible for periodontal or gum disease which affects more than 85% of domestic cats and dogs. Foul breath odour is an early sign suggesting that more severe heart, liver and kidney disease may follow. An article published in the December 1995 issue of the British Journal of Small Animal Practice confirms that processed pet foods produce periodontal disease which often leads to an AIDS-like condition in affected animals. (JSAP 1995 36, 542-546) Dr Tom Lonsdale of Riverstone NSW the author of the paper admits that he, along with almost everyone else, used to recommend processed pet foods."Previously we thought animals were suffering the effects of old age when in fact they were wasting away with periodontal disease and diet-induced AIDS." "Now we treat the periodontal disease and provide the pets with a natural diet. The removal of the poisons allows the immune system to recover and owners frequently report that their old pet is like a puppy/kitten again." "I believe that this information should have been available to Australian vets and their patients in 1993. The Australian Veterinary Journal refused to publish the research findings."

AIDS/HIV/AZT Controversy A growing number of scientists world-wide have publicly denounced the total failure of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis, questioned the meaning of the "AIDS test", and criticized the use of AZT which has been proven to be a toxic poison that makes the patient sicker and is actually the cause of AIDS deaths.
Toxic Effects of AZT on Pregnant Women and Babies

Diagnosis and Treatment
The following information is provided by
The New York State Department of Health
  • What are the symptoms of HIV infection?
Many people infected with HIV have no symptoms at all and may be unaware that they carry the virus. Some people may develop mild, temporary fly-like symptoms that disappear after a few days or weeks following infection. Others may have persistent swollen glands. The earlier HIV infection is detected, the sooner medical treatment can begin, which may help people stay healthier longer.

February 2002 HRSA Care ACTION PROVIDING HIV/AIDS CARE IN A CHANGING ENVIRONMENT Spirituality and Treatment of People Living With HIV Disease As if the physical challenges of HIV/AIDS were not hard enough, infection with the virus also raises the difficult spiritual questions that confront most people with life-threatening illnesses: What is life about? Why is there pain and suffering? What happens when life ends? Because HIV/AIDS has been so highly stigmatized as a result of its associations with sexuality, drug use, and death, many people living with HIV/AIDS also grapple with other painful questions: Did I bring this on myself? Do I "deserve" to be cut off by my church because of it? Does God love me? The way people living with HIV disease answer spiritual questions has profound implications for both their physical health and their health care providers. A growing body of research shows strong connections between the way people define the "meaning" of their illness and the strength of their immune systems and their ability to cope with illness and loss—and even the likelihood that they will adhere to medical treatment as prescribed. Evidence increasingly suggests that the attitude of medical caregivers toward their patients’ spirituality has serious ramifications for the level of trust and cooperation between patient and provider—and even for the efficacy of medical care itself.

    http://www.cwac.org/faq.html
www.cwac.org (Children and HIV) 1. How many children are known to be HIV+ in the UK? As of September 2002, 1233 children under the age of 15 have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In addition, there are 1211 children between the ages of 15-19. In the last ten years (1992-2002), 2254 children have been born to infected mothers. These children are either of indeterminate HIV status or not infected. Nevertheless, they are still affected by their mother’s illness. 2. How many children are living worldwide with HIV/AIDS? Of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, nearly 2.7 million are children under the age of 15, and 11.8 million are young people aged 15-24. An estimated 3 million people die from AIDS-related causes every year. 3. How long can a child born with HIV survive? In the UK, life expectancy for children has improved and subsequently increased with the development of combination therapy. Today for example, one adolescent who acquired HIV at birth has now reached their 20th birthday. Therefore, as treatment and research advances there is hope for a much improved quality of life. There is a small core of children who are "long-term non-progressors" aged between 12-16 who have yet to start on any HIV therapy. This is a promising sign of healthy living in children and highlights the importance of a good nutritional diet. This gives us hope for a more optimistic future for today’s children.
    4. Is there any known cure for a child who is HIV+?
