OSCIA Annual Meeting Providing Value to Forage Producers TORONTO, ONTARIO - January 26, 2004: Forage producers attending the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) 2004 Annual Meeting on February 3rd and 4th at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario are in for a rare treat. Dr. Neal P. Martin, Director, US Dairy Forage Research Center, USDA-ARS is on the agenda this year to speak about "Redesigning Alfalfa". OSCIA is very excited to welcome Dr. Martin to their annual meeting. "We are thrilled to have Dr. Martin participate in OSCIA's 2004 Annual Meeting", says Lloyd Crowe, President of OSCIA. "Dr. Martin is a leading forage researcher in North America and will be discussing unique and exciting new scientific developments in alfalfa. With today's challenging economic conditions, exploring new opportunities and efficiencies are even more important for today's food producers". Dr. Martin has had quite an extensive career in dairy forage research. Raised on a dairy farm in Ohio, Martin graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Agronomy. He then went on to obtain his M.S. in Agronomy and Ph.D. in Agronomy and Animal Science from Iowa State University.

Kate Dougherty The Daily Illini Agronomy Day at the University's South Farms included field tours featuring topics such as solutions to soybean rust and scab-resistant wheat varieties.
Kate Dougherty The Daily Illini Professor of plant pathology Snook Pataky compares different types of genetically- modified super sweet sweet corn during the 47th annual Agronomy Day at the University's South Farms on Thursday. The result of former University professor John Laughnan's research, super sweet corn is now a commercial standard. Agronomy Day 2003 once again connected agricultural growers, consumers and research scientists at the University of Illinois with the theme of "Agriculture at the Crossroads." The 47th annual event, held yesterday, featured tent displays and four different tours on the latest happenings in agricultural research at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center on the South Farms, located off of St. Mary's Road on Wright Street. The Agronomy Day activities began at 7 a.m. with hour-long wagon tours around the research plots that repeated every 30 minutes as groups were available.

The new Bt gene in StarLink provided an alternative to the Cry1A Bt genes in other commercial hybrids, so StarLink was viewed as a useful tool in managing the possible evolution of corn-borer resistance to Bt toxins. Figure 1. The StarLink controversy revealed the need to improve procedures for commodity segregation on the farm. Producers should plant varieties in ways that minimize potential contamination by pollen flow from nearby fields.Harvest, transport, and storage should be conducted in ways that minimize the opportunities for mixing of different crop varieties. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that the Cry9C protein in StarLink has characteristics of known allergens, though Cry9C itself has not yet been documented to actually be allergenic. Thus, the EPA gave Aventis approval to market StarLink varieties only if the harvested corn was channeled to nonhuman food uses, such as animal feed or ethanol production. Aventis began marketing StarLink on a limited scale in 1999 and required growers to restrict StarLink grain to nonfood uses.

    Beadman guides home a winner
    on horse nutrition

    Former champion jockey Darren Beadman is a professor in the art of race-riding but admitted today to still being an apprentice in the science of horse nutrition. Launching a major new publication, Feeding Horses in Australia – A guide for horse owners and managers, Darren said years of work with champion trainers had taught him plenty about horse well-being but he still had much to learn about feeding and nutrition. “It’s the traditional horses birthday on Sunday, and I’m sure there will be plenty of horses out there that hope they get this book,” he said. “In fact, it probably has a recipe for a birthday cake all horses would want to get their teeth into.” Darren said that although scientific information had always been available, the book explained the science in a way that made it accessible to all members of the horse industry. “Correct feeding is vitally important to get the most out of your horse whether you are a thoroughbred trainer or a part-time hacker,” he said. “I know many people feed their horses using traditional diets and with information passed down through families, and I’m pleased this book provides an enormous amount of complimentary information.

In this decade, in order to increase productivity and competitiveness and to assure better environment protection, deep technological and social changes are occurring on the sugarcane crop. These changes are corroborated by the State Ordinance Law number 42.05619, which regulares the burning of the leaves before harvesting the sugarcane in the State of São Paulo.
Along its 70 years of existence, the Centro Experimental do Instituto Biológico/Instituto Biológico has been developing plant protection research, including on sugarcane crop, in conjuction with the Departamento de Entomologia, Fiopatologia e Zoologia Agrícola da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiróz" and Centro de Ciências Agrárias/Universidade Federal de São Carlos. The technicians of these institutions are interested in the development of disease and pest control tecniques in a economical and environmentally safe way, specially concerning coal, rust, Mahanarva, fimbriolata and Migdolus spp., and in herbicide persistence in mechanically harvested sugarcane crop areas in the State of São Paulo.
