An interactive, multi-media learning and assessment program in pasture management is being developed, comprising a series of case studies with supporting information sections. The software was written using Macromedia Director . Each case study contains background information, a question, a list of alternative answers, feedback, and links to other sections of the case study based on user response. Resources such as graphics and video are integrated from external files as needed. Users are given case studies to conduct in the field and in the Pasture Management program. The latter extends the scope and depth of experience gained in the former, allowing users to study the consequences of their management decisions.

SCOTT STAGGENBORG
Northeast area extension agronomist

Professor of agronomy Scott Staggenborg, Northeast area extension agronomist and professor of agronomy at Kansas State University, is overseeing a program that encompasses 22 counties. The program focuses on the adoption of precision agriculture technology by producers, the improvement of water quality while maintaining production levels and increasing producition efficiencey of grain crops in the area. Staggenborg's main research interests include corn and sorghum growth and development; corn, sorghum and wheat production practices; and variable rate seeding and utilization of site specific agriculture technology. The Kansas Corn Commission, Kansas Soybean Commission, High Plains Sunflower Growers Association and Deere and Company all have been major supporters of Staggenborg's research. Staggenborg is a member of the American Society of Agronomy and Epsilon Sigma Phi.

KENT A. McVAY
Assistant professor of agronomy, extension specialist - soil and water conservation

Utilizing a no-tillage cropping system, extension specialist Kent A. McVay, a Kansas State University assistant professor of agronomy, developed a soil and water conservation program for dry-land agriculture. Using the success of this system, McVay has begun an effort to bring no-tillage production methods to irrigated agriculture in central and western Kansas. McVay has also established a long-term, no-till demonstration field at the agronomy farm north of K-State. This field is currently being used to train agronomists and showcase many best-management practices. McVay also analyzes water runoff from the field for sediments, nutrients and pesticide losses. The field is the focus of a master's research project attempting to model these losses. McVay has co-authored eight publications since 1993. In addition to seeding and no-tillage cropping systems, McVay's research interests include crop water use efficiency, water movement in soils and the impact of cropping systems on water quality.
