SPARSE CANOPY SYMPOSIUM INTRODUCTION
A General System to Measure and Calculate Daily Crop Water Use
Robert J. Lascano r-lascano@tamu.edu There is a need for an accurate method to calculate and to measure crop water use on real-time. We implemented a system that combines knowledge of crop water use and available technology to control the timely application of water. Our objective was to test the system and compare it to the empirical engineering approach that uses a crop coefficient to relate crop water use to a reference evapotranspiration. Technologies involved are the measurement

As in previous meetings, scientific sessions will deal with: influence of new potato varieties and healthy seed potato; influence of soil preparation, sprouting, planting, irrigation, harvesting, storing etc. advances in control methods of potato quality. The present meeting will highlight: rapid multiplication of seed potato; promotion of new potato varieties and new potato technologies. A particular attention will be paid to the main factors that can improve the yield, the quality and profitability of potato in the central and East-European countries, including the Russian Federation. The scientific programme will consist of oral presentations and poster sessions. Invited speakers will give keynote lectures at the beginning of each session. During the conference, there will be an administrative meeting of EAPR members of the agronomy section, as is usual. The excursion program will include: a one-day visit in a potato production area (experiments, demonstration fields and
commercial potato crops), not too far from Mamaia; tourist visit to the Black Sea coast

Aims
The course of Irrigation Agronomy aims to provide the students a comprehensive introduction in the climatic, crop, soil and environmental aspects that determine the water balance of a cultivated field and in the calculation of the crop water and irrigation water requirement at field and scheme level. During practical sessions the students receive training in the use of software packages that are helpful for the processing of climatic data, for the simulation of a soil water and salt balance and for the design of irrigation schedules. The aim of the homework is to give students extra time to work out in depth some practical examples and to train them in scientific reporting. At the end of the course the students should be able to plan and evaluate the water supply for irrigation schemes.
Content
The course encompasses a section on agro-climatology, the water balance of a cropped soil, irrigation water requirement and irrigation scheduling principles.
