Commercial harvesting activities in British Columbia, whether they be the commercial harvest of wild species, or the raising of aquatic species on farms, are a vital element of the economy of the province.
    Aquaculture
Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2002, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $304.5 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters:
    Commercial Fisheries
Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2002, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $363.8 million.

    Significant Points
    • Almost 4 in 10 salaried agricultural and food scientists work for Federal, State, or local governments.
    • A bachelor’s degree in agricultural science is sufficient for some jobs in applied research; a master’s or doctoral degree is required for basic research.
    • Slower-than-average job growth is projected because of limited growth in the Federal Government and modest growth in State and local governments, the largest employers of these scientists.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The work of agricultural and food scientists plays an important part in maintaining the Nation’s food supply by ensuring agricultural productivity and the safety of the food supply. Agricultural scientists study farm crops and animals, and develop ways of improving their quantity and quality. They look for ways to improve crop yield with less labor, control pests and weeds more safely and effectively, and conserve soil and water. They research methods of converting raw agricultural commodities into attractive and healthy food products for consumers. Agricultural science is closely related to biological science, and agricultural scientists use the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and other sciences to solve problems in agriculture. They often work with biological scientists on basic biological research and on applying to agriculture the advances in knowledge brought about by biotechnology.

    Significant Points
    • A Ph.D. degree usually is required for independent research, but a master’s degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research or product development; a bachelor’s degree is adequate for some nonresearch jobs.
    • Doctoral degree holders face considerable competition for independent research positions, particularly in universities; holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in biological science can expect better opportunities in nonresearch positions.
    • Biotechnological research and development will continue to drive employment growth.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to their environment. They research problems dealing with life processes. Most specialize in some area of biology such as zoology (the study of animals) or microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms). ( Medical scientists , whose work is closely related to that of biological scientists, are discussed elsewhere in the Handbook Biological scientists who work in applied research or product development use knowledge provided by basic research to develop new drugs and treatments, increase crop yields, and protect and clean up the environment. They usually have less autonomy than basic researchers to choose the emphasis of their research, relying instead on market-driven directions based on the firm’s products and goals. Biological scientists doing applied research and product development in private industry may be required to describe their research plans or results to nonscientists who are in a position to veto or approve their ideas, and they must understand the potential cost of their work and its impact on business. Scientists increasingly are working as part of teams, interacting with engineers, scientists of other disciplines, business managers, and technicians. Some biological scientists also work with customers or suppliers and manage budgets.

Currants and gooseberries are a valuable addition to home gardens and could be grown more extensively on a commercial basis. The plants are hardy enough for most areas of Ontario and can be grown in most garden soils. Black currants are prized for their distinctive flavor in juice, jam, jelly, pies and other desserts. They are also rich in Vitamin C. Red currants are used mainly for jelly or jam. White currants are not as popular as black and red currants. Gooseberries are eaten fresh or made into jam, pies and other desserts. Both currants and gooseberries can be frozen easily and kept for later use. Top of Page

A wide range of soils can be used. However, plants grow best in a cool, moist but well-drained, rich clay loam. On sandy soils, pay close attention to mulching and watering.

    ARS Water Database
The ARS Water Database is a collection of precipitation and streamflow data from small agricultural watersheds in the United States. This national archive of variable time-series readings for precipitation and runoff contains sufficient detail to reconstruct storm hydrographs and hyetographs. There are currently about 16,600 station years of data stored in the data base. Watersheds used as study areas range from .2 hectare (0.5 acres) to 12,400 square kilometers (4,786 square miles). Raingauge networks range from one station per watershed to over 200 stations. The period of record for individual watersheds vary from 1 to 50 years. Some watersheds have been in continuous operation since the mid 1930's. Various types of ancillary data are also maintained with the precipitation and streamflow. These include air temperature, land management practices, topography and soils information.
