Welcome...
The Federal Government of the United States of America has a coordinated, risk-based system to ensure new biotechnology products are safe for the environment and human and animal health. Established as a formal policy in 1986, the Coordinated Framework for Regulation of Biotechnology describes the Federal system for evaluating products developed using modern biotechnology. The Coordinated Framework is based upon health and safety laws developed to address specific product classes. The U.S. Government has written new regulations, policies and guidance to implement these laws for biotechnology as products developed. This framework has allowed the United States to build upon agency experience with organisms and products developed using conventional techniques.
This website focuses on the agricultural products of modern biotechnology. At this time, the searchable database available on this site only covers genetically engineered crop plants intended for food or feed that have completed all recommended or required reviews for food, feed or planting use in the United States. The U.S. Government agencies responsible for oversight of the products of agricultural modern biotechnology are the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Depending on its characteristics, a product may be subject to review by one or more of these agencies.

What is the National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS)?
The U.S. Department of Labor is the only national information source on the demographics, and working and living conditions of U.S. farmworkers. Since the NAWS began surveying farmworkers in 1988, it has collected information from over 25,000 workers. The survey samples all crop farmworkers in three cycles each year in order to capture the seasonality of the work. The NAWS locates and samples workers at their work sites, avoiding the well-publicized undercount of this difficult-to-find population. During the initial contact, arrangements are made to interview the respondent at home or at another convenient location. What information does the NAWS collect?
Household and family composition The NAWS interview contains a family grid that asks basic demographic information for all household members, and records information about each person's education level and migration patterns. Additional Demographics The NAWS collects a more comprehensive demographic profile of the farmworker himself including language ability, contacts in non-agricultural jobs, and parental involvement in agriculture.

http://www.uswcl.ars.ag.gov/EPD/remsen/rsagintr.htm
Introduction to Remote Sensing for Agriculture
Remote sensing is the ability to measure the properties of an object without touching it. Almost all of the applications of remote sensing to date have been based on observing crops in distinct areas of the electromagnetic spectrum. The spectrum is represented in the figure below. Agricultural remote sensing is commonly done in the visible, near-infrared and thermal infrared portions of the spectrum; however, new applications in the microwave area are under development. Regions within the Visible and Infrared Spectrum Visible Infrared 0.40-0.45 um Violet 0.7 - 3.0 um Near-Infrared 0.45-0.50 um Blue 3.0 - 14 um Thermal-Infrared 0.50-0.55 um Green 14.0 - 1000 um Far-Infrared 0.55-0.60 um Yellow 0.60-0.65 um Orange 0.65-0.70 um Red
Measurements
Spectral Characteristics
The usefulness of the visible and infrared portions of the spectrum can be seen by comparing the typical spectral responses of a crop canopy and a bare soil. Notice the following features of the curves above:
  • Peak in crop curve around 550 nm this corresponds to the color green. That is why plants look green to our eye, as this is where they reflect the most radiation in the visible part of the spectrum.

September 24, 1998 The United States maintains one of the world's safest food supplies, thanks in large part to an interlocking monitoring system that watches over food production and distribution at every level-locally, statewide and nationally. Continual monitoring is provided by food inspectors, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and other food scientists working for city and county health departments, state public health agencies, and various federal departments and agencies. Their precise duties are dictated by local, state and national laws, guidelines and other directives. Some monitor only one kind of food, such as milk or seafood. Others work strictly within a specified geographic area. Others are responsible for only one type of food establishment, such as restaurants or meat-packing plants. Together they make up the U.S. food safety team. The Clinton administration's Food Safety Initiative, begun in 1997, strengthens the efforts of all the members of the nation's food safety team in the fight against food-borne illness, which afflicts between 6.5 million and 33 million Americans every year. One of the initiative's major programs got under way in May 1998 when the Department of Health and Human Services (which includes FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency signed a memorandum of understanding to create a Food Outbreak Response Coordinating Group, or FORC-G. The new group will:
