    Introduction
Industrial hemp ( Cannabis sativa ) is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. For centuries, its fibres have been used to make ropes, sails and clothing. The species was banned in North America in the 1930s because its leaves and flowers contain a hallucinogenic drug known as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It was banned internationally in 1961 under the United Nations' Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. In 1998, Canada created Industrial Hemp Regulations under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. These regulations allow for the controlled production, sale, movement, processing, exporting and importing of industrial hemp and hemp products that conform to conditions imposed by the Regulations.

    overview
Rural America is home to a fifth of the Nation's people, keeper of natural amenities and national treasures, and safeguard of a unique part of American culture, tradition, and history. Today, rural America comprises over 2,000 counties, contains 75 percent of the Nation's land, and includes 49 million people. ERS research explores how investments in rural people, businesses, and communities affect the capacity of rural economies to prosper in the new and changing global marketplace. Equally important is our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the Nation's small farmers who are increasingly dependent on these rural economies for their employment and economic support. Introduction
Abortion in horses may result from a variety of causes. Infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses or fungi may attack the fetus or its membranes, resulting in fetal death and its expulsion. Other factors such as twinning, hormonal deficiencies or congenital anomalies may also result in death of the fetus and abortion. Some of the more common causes are discussed below.
    Infectious Causes of Abortion
Viral Abortion The most common cause of virus-induced abortion in mares is equine herpesvirus-1. This virus has two subtypes.

Industrial Hemp - Production and Management
Hemp is tolerant of light spring frosts, and hard fall frosts will assist maturity by killing green leaf tissue remaining as the seeds mature. Hemp performs well on a range of soil types, but is intolerant of poor drainage conditions - saturated soils will quickly cause stunting, yellowing, and death of plants. CONTENT
All operators provide crop acreage and quantities harvested, inventories of livestock and poultry, value of products sold, land use and ownership, irrigation activities, amount of commodity credit loans, number of hired laborers, federal program payments, and operator characteristics. Selected operators provide additional information on production expenses (including interest), fertilizer and chemical use, machinery and equipment, market value of land and buildings, and income from farm-related sources.
    FREQUENCY
Every 5 years since 1982, for years ending in "2" and "7." There was a census for 1978, between 1974 and 1954 censuses were taken for years ending in "4" and "9." http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/
NPGS is a cooperative effort by public (State and Federal) and private organizations to preserve the genetic diversity of plants. The world's food supply is based on intensive agriculture, which relies on genetic uniformity. But this uniformity increases crop vulnerability to pests and stresses. Scientists must have access to genetic diversity to help bring forth new varieties that can resist pests, diseases, and environmental stresses. The NPGS aids the scientists and the need for genetic diversity by:
    • acquiring crop germplasm preserving crop germplasm evaluating crop germplasm documenting crop germplasm distributing crop germplasm
Since many important crop species originate outside the United States, the first steps toward diversity are acquisition and introduction. New germplasm (accessions) enter NPGS through
collection, donation by foreign cooperators or international germplasm collections. An identifying number such as the Plant Introduction number (PI number) is assigned to each accession. The accession is then evaluated, maintained, and made available for distribution. Through these efforts, NPGS assists in improving the quality and
