Agricultural History in Our Community
In the mid 1800's and until the mid 1900's, the areas of North Kildonan, East Kildonan and East St. Paul amounted to a rather small community largely dependent on agriculture for income. Some of the main crops grown during this time included wheat, barley, oats, corn, potatoes, seed flax, and rye. Besides these crops, there were, and still are, some livestock farms. Statistics will be supplied for these crops. They will include mostly older statistics due to the lack of more recent studies. Information will be given on these crops with regard to where in particular they were grown and in what volume. Also, there will be some historical information provided clarifying where and when the the first people settled in this area and the hardships they had in starting their farms.
Basically, the first settlers came to this area in about 1811 as part of the Selkirk Settlement . This settlement was set up by Lord Selkirk who was a rich Scotsman interested in helping the poor people of the British Isles. During the early 1800's, many people in the British Isles were suffering financially. The opportunity of free land, which was being offered to the new settlers, was enough to entice some to come to Canada starting in 1811. Although the total amount of people who had arrived only totalled 18, it was to be the start of Winnipeg, and other small towns in the Red River Valley. Lord Selkirk continued to bring people to the new land until his death in 1820. The people of this area were to go through many hardships while trying to settle the area. Many of their crops would fail and there would be floods such as those in 1826 and 1850. Another problem that these people had to face was the extremely cold winter weather.

Thus this post is somewhat a rambling account about sugar. In 1637, Pieter Brouwer introduced Brazilian sugar cane to Barbados and from there it made its way down to Suriname. Sugar was very important as it was often used as currency. For instance, in 1690 one lb of sugar was equal to 2 nickels (stuivers). Letterwood (wood used in printing) was also a currency and 1 lb of sugar= 3 lbs of letterwood. In 1692 one paid with sugar to get married. The reformed church journal of 1720-1740 has entries that show that 1000 lbs of sugar equals f50 a fee necessary to marry outside the church. In 1694 one paid 20,000 lbs of sugar to be buried inside the church. 10,000 lbs was paid to be buried in the church cemetery. If the plantation owner was buried on the plantation 400 lbs of sugar was paid to the church. Children paid 200 lbs when buried on the plantation. Other people paid according to a downward sliding scale. One also paid 150 lbs of sugar to reserve a seat in church. One paid with sugar for legal document such as wills (100 lbs), a copy of a will (50 lbs), a contractual document (100 lbs).

A SHORT HISTORY OF
ALABAMA AGRICULTURE, 1820-1945
by Dr. Dwayne Cox, University Archivist
From statehood (1819) until the end of World War II, nothing influenced Alabama's economic, social, and political life more than agriculture. Before the Civil War, climate, soil, and market demand fostered cotton cultivation, which brought with it slavery and a paternalistic social order. After the war, white and black tenant farmers replaced slave labor, the price of cotton dropped, and grass-roots agrarian unrest followed. Government and business interests combined to gain control of agricultural policy during the early twentieth century, which they retained through the end of World War II. By that time, mechanization, rural to urban migration, and crop diversification had altered Alabama agriculture, but farm and forest products remained central to the state's economy and those who had an economic interest in them still had a political voice as strong as any. Extensive white settlement of Alabama followed the War of 1812 and the defeat of the Creek Nation. Most of the settlers came from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, pushed by land exhausted through the over-cultivation of cotton and drawn by the rich soil of the Tennessee Valley and the Black Belt. They brought with them slave labor and the plantation system, which were readily transplanted in Alabama. Steady demand for cotton made this product the nation's leading export during the first half of the nineteenth century and solidified the planter elite's sense of self-importance. On the eve of the Civil War, however, Alabama was only one generation removed from the frontier and most of the state's farmers owned few, if any, slaves.

The survey of the development of man and agriculture is divided into three periods
Click on the picture The pre-agricultural times
correspond to collecting, hunting and fishing. It started approximately 3 million years BP. The agricultural times
began with the development of agriculture simultaneously at six points in the world. It lasted from 10000 years BP up to the 19th century. The agro-industrial times
began in England with the industrial revolution. It lasted from the 19th century up to nowadays.
The lenght of these periods is very different
The oldest human vestiges known up to nowadays are dated 3 million years BP, agriculture started around 10000 years BP and the agro-industrial times have only 150 years. If man had appeared on January 1rst, agriculture had started on the second half of December and the agro-industry on December 31st, late in the evening.

A History of Sustainable Agriculture
The term organic was first widely used in the USA by J.I. Rodale, founder of Rodale Press, in the 1950s. Rodale was both the popularizer of the term organic (and by implication notions of sustainability), but also, in the scientific community, the inspiration for the denigration of the term. Rodale failed to convince scientists of the validity of his approach because of his reliance on what were perceived to be outrageous unscientific claims of organic farming's benefits. This was unfortunate as a number of scientists in the USA and Europe were investigating and promoting sustainability in agriculture at the time, most notably Sir Albert Howard and William Albrecht. The scientific and governmental fascination with using agrichemicals, monoculture, and specialized equipment for food production severely constrained professional interest in questions of sustainability. One other important historical influence on the development of sustainable agriculture was the research on the connection between the condition of the soil, food quality, and human health. Some members of the medical community in the UK had been performing clinical research experiments on the subject since early in the 20th century. This community was of the view that human health was greatly negatively affected by poor soil management practices in agriculture, particularly poor organic matter management.
