Strategic Targets for Agricultural Development And Restructuring of the Countryside
The beginning of the new millenium finds Greek Agriculture, both strategically and tactically, fully prepared for confronting the parameters which will arise as a result of the dynamically ever changing international environment. An environment which at the European level includes the application of the agricultural aspect of Agenda 2000 and at the international level includes the negotiations being carried out at the turning point of the millenium within the framework of the World Trade Organization. It is within this environment that we have shaped our policies which will promote our strategy for the Development of agriculture, the Competitiveness of our products and the Restructuring of the countryside. It is these policies which, based on economic realism, social sensitivity and vision of prospective outcome, will mould new dynamics, which will minimize the inherent shortcomings and structural weaknesses of Greek agriculture and will lead to an increase of agricultural income.

Agriculture With farmers managing almost half of the EU’s land area, the agricultural sector is a major source of pressure on Europe’s environment. Over the past five decades, the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) - accounting for around half of the EU budget - has encouraged the sector to become more and more intensive, as has the growing globalisation of the world’s economy. As a result, the agricultural sector is responsible for a large share of the pollution of surface waters and seas by nutrients, for the loss of biodiversity, and for pesticide residues in groundwater. Reforms of the CAP in the 1990s, and measures taken by the sector itself, have brought about some improvements, but more is needed to balance agricultural production, rural development, and the environment. webmaster@eea.eu.int

http://www.cook.rutgers.edu/~horteng/
Horticultural engineering blends agricultural engineering, plant science, computer science, and control theory to produce effective and efficient plant growing systems, whether in high-tech greenhouses or low-tech row cover systems. In case of greenhouse production systems, a frequently used term is Controlled Environment Agriculture. People trained in this discipline have a strong understanding of and appreciation for the engineering, biological, and environmental aspects of plant production. Horticultural engineers play a vital role in the secure, healthy, and cost-effective production of many edible and ornamental plant species on which we all depend.

AGRI-FOOD X CONFERENCE and SYMPOSIUM
Coming Soon: Agri-Food X and Biotechnology and the Social Sciences Symposium Proceedings 28 June 2002 - Report released: The Organic Food Market in New Zealand: 2002 download as PDF
Background
In 2000 the School of Social Sciences, Otago University, established the Centre for the Study of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CSAFE). CSAFE has a director and three researchers based at Otago University, and has 5 affiliated researchers around New Zealand. Research undertaken through CSAFE concentrates on the relationships within the Agri-Food system. Agri-Food analysis examines the links between different aspects of the production, distribution and consumption of foods, and relates these to particular social, economic and environmental outcomes. While many researchers are concentrating on the regulatory and policy process relating to human/environment interactions, CSAFE represents a group of researchers from different specialisations within both social science and agricultural extension with a common interest in evaluating the influence of changing agricultural systems on environmental sustainability, as well as the counter influence of sustainability, environmental and food safety concerns on agricultural systems. Consequently, CSAFE represents a specialised body of researchers competent to examine the sustainability claims of different systems of agricultural production.
