Return to the UK abc Home Page Uploaded Nov 1977 SMALLHOLDER FARMERS', PASTORALISTS' AND ARTISANAL FISHERFOLK'S INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS AND AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY, IN KENYA "There is no such activity as Bioprospecting - there is only Biopiracy" RAFI From: IT Kenya / ITDG CONTENTS: INTRODUCTION THE DEVELOPMENT OF ' FARMERS' RIGHTS PATENTS ... IMPLICATIONS FOR SMALL-SCALE FOOD PRODUCERS IN KENYA INTRODUCTION [Return to Contents] In Kenya, as in most of the rest of the developing world, the indigenous genetic resources of poor communities are being lost, because of the spread of industrial agriculture and the consequent marginalisation of small-scale food production, and they are being stolen by corporate-sponsored scientists and other plant collectors - the Biopirates - without adequate compensation. PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT 'Prior Informed Consent' means that when someone from within or outside of the community wants to use the community's genetic resources, for whatever purpose, they should explain exactly what they are going to use them for, who the ultimate enduser will be, and agree, in a legally-binding way, how any benefits, from the further commercial development of these resources, will be shared with the community. In order for communities to be able to negotiate effectively, make reasonable assessments of the implications of any information they are given and be able to claim adequate compensation for their genetic materials, there needs to be an agreed framework supported by appropriate legislation at national level. Ag economist: Smallest farms are fastest growing group in Nebraska
While the numbers of very large and very small farms in Nebraska are steadily increasing, farms spanning the gap between these extremes are getting harder to find, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agricultural economist said. This dichotomy recently has become more pronounced, Glenn Helmers said. The university Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources ag economist analyzed preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2002 Census of Agriculture. The agricultural census defines very small farms as those with annual sales of under $2,500 and very large farms as those having more than $500,000 in annual sales. "There are increasing demands for large and small farms with the middle sort of being damaged," Helmers said, referring to shifts in farm numbers.

Protection of bees: Commission steps up measures against exotic parasites
- The European Commission adopted a Decision stepping up measures to protect the EU bee population from two exotic parasites. The small hive beetle Aethina tumida and the parasitic mite Tropilaelaps have never been reported in the EU but, if introduced from third countries, they could severely endanger bee health, the apiculture industry and honey production. To prevent the parasites from being introduced into the EU the measures now adopted will limit imports of both live honey bees and bumble bees and require imported bees to be examined for signs of the parasites when they arrive in the EU.
