A g r i c u l t u r a l N e w s Census of Agriculture out (Washington-AP) The latest Census of Agriculture shows the
top three percent of farms and ranches make most of the money in
agriculture.
U-S-D-A's most in-depth look at who grows what in America shows
about 70-thousand-600 farms and ranches making a-half (m) million
dollars or more a year, produced about 62 percent of the nation's
farm goods in 2002. A survey taken five years earlier showed
three-point-six percent of farms earning that much and producing
just over 56 percent of ag products.
The census, which is done every five years, says the nation's farms produced 200-point-six (b) billion in products in 2002, with an average market value of about 94-thousand-200 dollars. That's a gain of about 34-hundred dollars from 1997. USDA RELEASES 2002 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE WASHINGTON, June 3, 2004 - Half of America's farms and ranches have Internet access and nearly 39 percent report using a computer for their farm business, according to new data released from the 2002 Census of Agriculture. "These data illustrate the importance of the eGovernment initiatives being implemented by USDA," said Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman. "We are making more information available to farmers and ranchers through the Internet and helping to provide broadband access to rural communities. To date, this administration has provided over $253 million in broadband loans for rural areas."

Spring 2004 2004 Agricultural Lenders School set for June 7-11 in Columbia
“Learning to identify and make quality agricultural loans today and in the future will be the focus of the 2004 Agricultural Lenders School to be held in Columbia June 7-11,” according to Vern Pierce. “Banking professionals from Missouri and other states who make loans to farmers and agribusinesses are the intended audience for the intensive, five-day school,” said Pierce, Commercial Agricultural economist at the University of Missouri. “Nationally recognized experts will serve as faculty in a hands-on practical approach to learn the business of making agricultural loans,” the MU economist said. “Freddie Barnard, Purdue University professor, will lead the training in analyzing real-life farm financial statements.” Lenders who previously attended the school agreed that the school delivered what it promised. According to Patrick Kussman, with Regional Missouri Bank in Marceline, “Not only does this school provide some of the most outstanding instructors, but also provides you with ‘hands on’ experience.” “I would recommend it highly to anyone involved in agricultural lending,” Kussman said.
